BOSS IR-2 REVIEW – Better Than A Tube Amp? Best Amp In A Box? Best Pedal Amp? Amp & Cabinet Review
Is the Boss IR-2 Amp & Cabinet Pedal the best amp in a box? Does it sound and feel as good as a tube amplifier. I put the brand new amp pedal to the test, going through each amp setting, showing my favorite settings and how well this thing takes pedals. With built-in effects loop, this thing is awesome. I’ll go through the strengths and weaknesses. Do you think it’s better than an Iridium, Milkman, Universal Audio, Victory Amps? Tell me in the comments!

THANK YOU for a review WITHOUT other pedals in the mix. Hearing the pedal is what I want. Great job.
I use this one since it came out for all recordings and even live, ofcourse it is not the same as a nice amp, but it saves a lot of hassle and if you have a good monitor on stage, it does the trick for me.
Hi, which tremolo are you using?
Great review and incredible playing!!
FINALLY! A great review where great player don’t try to play metal on IR-2. Thank goodness. Amazing job! Love both content and playing.
Nice job.
Great playing
Great review Neil. Thanks from Tim in London UK.????
Thanks for a very honest an Brill review
I have one! wasn't sure at first but I have found I have grown quick to like it more and more! you just need to set it up work with your set up! once you have that sorted! its all very good
Excellent demo! Quick question for you can you use this pedal with a power ramp into a cabinet?
Nice playing – thanks for the straight through demo – what are your feelings about this a few months in?
It would sound better played through my ass
Well done demo
Can you put this pedal in front of a clean fender amp. With the Cab simulators off!
maybe we could here the output from the pedal and not what you hear in the room?????
Thanks for the honest video. Won't be buying one of these. Other YouTube channels recorde them with all this u beaut gear. Good video
I love the way the Tele is aged. Looks awesome
Hi Neil, thanks for your video from Italy! Finally lots of nice clean sounds and really nice playing. I'm considering purchasing the Boss Ir2 and since I would like to keep my Dv Mark C112 speaker (very light) I was thinking of a pedal power amp (e.g. Harley Benton GPA 100). Alternatively, considering a cabinet change, an FRFR, but I don't know which one. Since we have very similar musical tastes and sounds and I also play blues, soul, R'n'B, swing, etc. In your opinion, which of the two could be the most suitable solution? A thousand thanks!
Hi Neil. Very very nice playing and review indeed, thank you. Would have been nice if you elaborated a little on incorporting this into a normal board, ie using it as just another effects pedal rather than an amp/cab simulator. I've had it for a short while and so far have only used it into my amp, which is a solid state pedal platform with rather flat response, albeit it is a bass amp (D-class Warwick Gnome 300W into a Warwick Gnome 10" bass bin, loud and punchy AF). I found that the IR-2 sounds better as is, with the cab simulators on, just as the Boss ME-80 does, for example. It is just another option of sound, with the cabs on or off. I guess all that will depend on the typoe of amplifier it goes into. To come back to my question, I am considering playing the IR with all my other pedals, including 2 or three drives and distortions, choruses, reverbs, delays, wah, Whammy DT etc.. How would you link all that for use into an amplifier? I play mainly double humbucker guitars. Best regards! Ivan
I have a question, this can work putting it directly to a Fender Champion 40 input since it does not have send/return? Thank you!
Great vid, what settings were you playing at the intro or was that a tube amp?
Wish it had: aux in, midi, more extensive ambiance, two outs with ability to send one to front to house, ability to use two stereo IR's.
Quite funny you start playing Desire on the Vox setting.
The BOSS ir2 is conectec to frfr or pa?? Suena genial
I want this to be better then my tonex but note sure it is… I guess I won’t know until I try it. Nice job using a real cab in the video. I sometimes find it hard to hear the pedals when folks go straight into their audio interface and I can’t hear the speaker room sound.
The beauty is if you don't like the stock IRs, you can load new ones. That's what I'm doing with mine. I've already heard from a few who have this pedal and did that. Went from "meh" to "yeah!????".
Cool video and pedal. Enjoyed your playing as well! What would be a cheap way to play live in small venue w/o a PA system. To play it through the tube amp I have seems like would defeat its purpose — would overprint the output with the amp’s response. Cheers!
So when u go from pa to amp,are going into fx return or into amp input. Also i guess the line from pa to amp is both amp and cab sim from the boss ir2 pedal. Geat video and playing.
Does it sound just as bad as the Katana stuff? Hard to judge on you tube. My guess is that the software is probably a Katana without effects and a speaker
Sounds great, man. Do you recommend pairing it with a tube amp or another speaker, like a FRFR?
Thanks, for home playing, what are the options for output except headphone? Thanks
Who needs tubes eh
That is some great playing!
I've heard different demo of Boss IR-2 and Amp simulations sounded terrible, more gainy Amps sounded nearly same as old Roland Boss GT-6 multi effect that I used 10 years ago, so uninspiring not like real amps at all. I feel like trick of these pedals are all postprocess effects added after main pedal.
Great playing! Was that an Andy Timmons lick you did in there?
I thought the pedal remembers the eq setting you had on prior to switch it ? I thought I heard someone say that. That tele sound sick through it for sure.
My ZOOM G2 has a very nutral Twin 65 mod….!!!
Sounds great. A simple cab on/ off switch would sell it to me even more. Guess I could easily store one with and one without to easily call up depending on the situation. Nice to be able to achieve an overdriven twin sound at any volume!
Hi
How do go from your PA to your seaker cab ? Interested in that… ????
That is a ridiculous question, ffs.
So recording direct to a DAW while using only headphones would not be very realistic non good sounding?
Great to hear the various amps without so much gain/overdrive all over. Very nice demo showing sounds available and played with style.
WE'VE USED IT ON OUR LAST RELEASE, SOUNDS AMAZING
Darn, just found out I'm not getting this pedal til early january and my Boss BP-1w won't be arriving until April. Oh well, got my spot in line. ????♂️
Great sound! What pickups are in that Telecaster?
