Hey guys! Enjoy my review and sound test of Sterling by Music Man SUB StingRay 5 BK Bass guitar – cheap, affordable instrument that can sound great.

I bought it really cheap, B-stock and I think that if you want to buy a Music Man style bass guitar but you can’t afford a real one this would be a great alternative! I bought it for some cheap gigs so I don’t need to worry if someone breaks it. It has its flaws but in this price range you won’t find any better bass in Music Man style. Please let me know what you think about this bass in the comment section. Strings: D’addario Pr Steels 45-105.

  • If anyone is interested, I finished the project. EMG MM and a P Basss soapbar, BTS circuit, 18V . I got rid of the battery box altogether and was able to fit the 2 9 V batteries into the space. Albridge ( really nice replacement), slanted 4 string retainer. I chopped the pickguard and added matte nickel knobs. I true oiled the whole neck.
I have a bunch of really nice basses, but I take this one (plus one of my others) to every gig. I solo a lot so I love the extra range to the high F. The bass sounds fat and it has clarity. For slapping I still prefer a mid 70s Jazz, but other than that, the Ray kills

  • Silver Rain, cool. I just bought one of those used. The tuners are crap, on mine they rattle on the open strings. But the bass plays incredibly well after I set it up. I'll be a great platform for modding it. EMG MM plus a soapbar P right in front of it and a BTS EQ. This bass will be a beast.

  • I'm looking to purchase this bass due to your review. I'll be mainly using it for bedroom practice. Do you think the hotness of the pickup will be too much for a vox pathfinder 10 bass amp or a small fender rumble?

  • I bought one of these a couple years ago and the only issues I’ve had with it was my own fault, it fell over and the tuning key for the G string snapped off. I couldn’t find a cheap aftermarket replacement but I contacted Sterling and they sent me a new one for free, which was really simple to switch out. The battery lasts a surprisingly long time as well, much longer than any other active basses I’ve owned. Definitely recommend.

  • I bought a Ray 5 from CME because of your review. Not sure if other people's Rays have this but what sold me was my bass having rolled fingerboard edges. Replacing the tuners with Hipshot ultralites improved the balance.

  • Hey Adam, I have a 4 String Ibanez GSR200SM. I really really want a 5 string and I really like The Sterling Ray 5 its just amazing for what I can see. The only thing that concerns me is Neck Dive or Unbalance what can you tell me about that?

  • Just bought one for the exact reason that you mentioned. I play gigs that I don't want to bring my expensive stuff to. Surprisingly, I can't believe this low price for such a solid, well build, great sounding bass. It far superior than anything else in this price range and can easily be compared to much higher grade instruments. So comfortable to play. Impressive. Thanks for you well done review!

  • out of all videos out there on youtube about this bass your video is a complete all-rounder and its categorised and short – Subscribed. I'm a guitarist getting into bass and I'm confused about which one I should choose ( sire Marcus v7, sterling subray 5 or Ibanez sr505 or any other bass you feel like it's worth buying ) your suggestions would be greatly appreciated- Thank you!????????

  • I was looking for an inexpensive 4-string for gigs. I ended up getting the 4-string verson of this. I. Did upgrade it with an SD pickup and a Mojotone preamp. Totally worth the extra $200! It plays great and sounds exactly like a late 70’s MM Stingray now, and I worry a lot less about it being stolen during breaks or loading in/out. I can leave my vintage gear at the home studio now without sacrificing playability or tone! Great video, and superb playing, Sir!
