Ariel Posen Talk & Tones 2024 [New Strat & New Board!]

Loads of fantastic tones and advice from one of the best in the business

Welcome to the show. We are delighted to welcome our dear chum Ariel Posen back to Schwangri-La. Canadian singer-songwriter and of course monster guitar player, Ariel has carved out a stellar reputation over the last decade or so for his unique approach to the instrument and writing.
He joins us during a UK Tour in October 2024, as we go over his current pedalboard and rig, take in a new Fender Custom Shop guitar and get plenty of insight into what it takes to play at this level.

As this video goes live, there’s still chance to see Ariel on the current tour.

  • Great episode. Ariel and his band were fantastic at Thekla, Bristol. Great to see you there Mick!

  • Gospel is the right word, and it is wonderful, Ariel. Fantastic to listen to your progression over the years.

  • Love the idea of exploring what's right for the song. So many times I was overplaying when I should have been listening to how I fit into the mix. Listening to my improvisation on recording alerted me to the listening process.

  • FYI, 23:30 discussion is because a cool artifact of playing the 5th below together with chosen note, you get an octave lower with an octave pedal! ????????

  • Man, I heard that fuzz an immediately went to look for the pedal… $300… if I knew I could sound like that, I’d consider it. So good. Killer tone. Ariel is great.

  • Hey guys! I am in the process of building my first pedalboard, and i have a few questions. First i was wondering what distortion pedal i should get, at first i was thinking of maybe getting the walrus audio Eras five state distortion but after some listening it may be too much gain for me, so i was wondering if you had any recommendations for a good amp style distortion that can stack well. Also i was searching for some modules for my board so i don’t have to plug in directly into a pedal and was wondering if you have any recommendations for a Pedaltrain board.

Love the show, keep at it.

  • 26:12 ???? I heard that little “Clink-clink! Clunk!” and I got really excited. Lol “MULECASTER!” I don’t have any of their stuff YET but I absolutely love Mule.

  • The Triads thing that he did with Paul Davids a few months back was so inspirational. Hope everyone here has seen it.

Ariel is just such a lovely human ????

  • I mean that Ariel CAN Play Jazz! and so can Dan & so can Mick!, butt ( thats my bad, ha ha),

the reaction from Mick in the beginning is probably the low tune growl &slide, as with me, and Im already for this treat a 2nd whirl, and now Im getting Norah Jones /Bonnie Raitt – ..well country vibe…, and Ariel is canadian, rite!

Ariel Posen, Im aksin ya aye questiooneirement: now when in the light of de moon or de brightnesess offa de Candic ZUN shall ya play JAZZ aye gain???? VIll ya stop this heavy lifting with the pinky finger, it is not good for the circulation of: hmmm..left -hand-5-fingerJAZZ! Yes: stop immediately, and move to aye GYpsy-luxury "Camp", with only de best of Jazz Guitars: from the Black Man strat to Jim Hall to Joe Pass to Charlie C …..or do you forefer concer n what Keif Rich said to Chuck: there is no money in it, thats rich for me from Keith R. , who solved the "JAZZ" dilemma by cutting the low string…..BUTT:

why isnt there around Keith Richesss 5 -string signatutre model? ha!?!!!

Keith isn answering, and Julian Lage is traveliing down with his innate JAZZ intoAmericana with Telecasters & small Fender Tweeds thru the mississipi & New Orl sweaty swamps probably to ENGLAND: the Isle of the TWEEDs,

Youre good players, but wheres the Jazz ? I wrote some bossas /sambas with a classical guitar in me youth, sounded jazzy,

I listended to John Mayer: to me He picked some riffs from Mark Knoplfer, ok and good , but NOWHERE near MarkKnpfler!!

My love would be: 2 gtrs Jazzy + vocals

  • “Skip to the Solo” is out there in the form of Frank Zappa’s “Shut up and Play Your Guitar” triple album and I believe several follow ups. And it is edited live cuts, focused on the solos.

  • Just need to make a correction. During the talk about the Thermae Mick made the statement that it's hard to get predictable repeats and stuff with the CB Mood. That might be true with the MK1 however MK2 can sync to midiclock. I do use it in live settings with predictable results ????

  • Loved what he said about not comparing to Instagram players and doing what ever it takes to get your art out. Amazing

  • Gutted that I won't have moved back to the UK until after the tour is over, definitely on my list for the next time though!

  • Love Ariel – but miss him playing with the Bros Landreth. Such a nice pairing of pure slide players.

  • What an awesome show, Ariel is so inspiring and talented !! I’ve noticed Dan has a real ‘tell’ when the guest is extra special to him – although all guests are special to Dan, some just more so 😉 He becomes very still, clasps his hands in his lap and is so focused – almost like he is meditating and transported by the talent in the room. It’s Dan and Mick that make the magic, and the guests are the bonus. Cheers !

  • Ariel- I’m officially offering my services as a guitar tech/roadie. I’m serious. It would be an honor and a dream fulfilled.

  • I think I remember a Shawn Tubbs rig rundown where he had an Octoland with the gain at 0 too. I thought I needed one then. Now I definitely do.
