Nano Cortex vs ToneX Pedal: the definitive comparison (Scientific Tone Comparison vs Tube Amps)

The NDSP captures sound noticeably lower in quality.. Tonex and NAM sound thick and greasy, like true analog, with some bite/definition and depth that NDSP just can't provide.. and that's what i'm all about! Now that they are adding Delay and Modulation to the software and pedals.. this is just a no brainer.. TONEX is the game changing device.
Great vid. This kind of proves that with the right production, knowhow and whatever you can afford – you can get the sound you are looking for relatively close to the original. (in other words, it doesn't matter, as long as you don't care how you get there). Great vid.
I have been playing small to medium-sized locations ( 100-3500 ppl) with a 50 W SilverJubilee (old one) and a 4x12cab for over 26 years. With more and more recstrictions in terms of stage level I decided to check out digital options. After a lot of triel and error (QC, Helix, Fm3, Kemper) I finally came to Tonex and never ever looked back again. Part of why I liked it is detailed scientifically in this video: it feels and behaves much like my amp. I am using it live with my pedalboard, straight to the pa and I am on IEMs. Reliable, easy to transport and soundwise super amazing rig. In the past months I have furthermore been using the Tonex exclusively for recording- with great results. Amazing product.

5 hours!? No way Jose. It takes 5 minutes to make a capture in default mode with Tonex. Gtx super 1660 ti here. You meed an Nvidia GPU with CUDA cores.

Vielen Dank für ein weiteres Video mit einem hochwertigen und ausführlichen Vergleich. Ich habe das ToneX gekauft. Dafür gab es 3 Gründe. 1. Ich nutze seit geraumer Zeit die Amplitube Software und war von Anfang an begeistert, welchen Klang diese Softwarelösung bietet. 2. Das ToneX ist derzeitig bei Thomann in einer Sonderedition (nur die Farbe ist Silber) für 349 Euro im Angebot und man bekommt zusätzlich, zwei kostenlose Zugaben (Distorsion-Pedals als Software). 3. Auch die Software "ToneX" gibt es ohne Aufpreis als Max-Version dazu – welche ich hervorragend in Amplitube 5 einbinden kann. IK Multimedia hat Soft- und Hardware geschaffen, die auch bezahlbar ist und anderen Anbietern, deren Produkte mehrere tausens Euro kosten, immer näher kommt und manchmal denen bereits etwas vorraus ist. Wenn nun noch das kostenlose Upgrade kommt und mehr Effekte möglich sind ist das absolute Spitzenklasse.

Interesting! I disagree that profiling via software is preferable unless you have a permanent setup like you do. Also if you are recording via a DAW then fx included in the box really does not matter and if you are gigging you probably already have better fx pedals anyway. I was surprised also that Nano Cortex has a higher latency, which may prove problematic when using other digital pedals. 48 v 44 sample rate really makes no difference to sound quality either. The point about a pitch shifter or an overdrive.? Why have an overdrive when it’s so easy to capture the amp sound with an overdrive anyway as because as you pointed out it only takes 5 mins. Personally I would choose the Nano Cortex over Tonex despite the higher latency as a gigging tool either as back up or on a pedalboard. This is because of speed of capture processing without the need for a computer which I consider a positive.I would not use either in the studio as that would be Axe Fx and real amps.

Great comparative test and it is much appreciated! I have the Tonex pedal and see no reason to change to another device as IK keep performing the process of constant improvement.
Perhaps a future IK software update may improve the training time needed to replicate an amp, etc.
The profiling thing.. but who in the earth does that, you are doing the profiling if you are a total pro, with nice equipment and stuff.. the rest .. just download them. Tonex wins this, better and cheaper.

Because you dont have the Profiles I have on my Kemper and I don't have the Captures tou have on your QC or ToneX, just like we all don't own the identical tube amps and pedals or own the identical guitars and pickups…
Choosing a winner is just a psychological obsession with guitarists to appease what they use, to make them feel better about their choice.
There you have it everyone, the master himself by split decision has chosen the tonex! Also, as a side note, if you have a pc with a nvidia gpu captures are much faster ????????
I have the tonex and I'm fully satisfied with it. Null tests don't bother me at all. Why? At our lab we did a null test with the amplifier itself. The only difference was a time period between the recordings of an hour so temperature changes and small drifting tolerances of certain electronics and tubes became important. A significant difference appeared in the null test. All these new digital devices are more consistent over a period of time then the tube amps. Nice video btw. I like your playing and approach.

Thanks Leo. As a ToneX pedal owner, I was very interested in this comparison. To me the biggest advantage the Nano Cortex has over the ToneX Pedal is the speed of doing amp captures. Other than that, I'm sticking with my ToneX and looking forward to the FX upgrade.

I believe the hype is real for ToneX , it does have a lot of bells and whistles and FX and I like the PC plugins. BUT…..
Buyer beware: Tech issues, Set up/ sign up issues, Latency and glitchy Issues.
I have noticed ToneX has a lot of negative reviews with user experience.
Positives: I do like IK multimedia Amplitube sims. The ToneX is cool, not much wrong with the sounds it's capable of producing but I'm gonna go with the NANO CORTEX 100% .
I bought the NANO CORTEX. The pitch /transpose feature is a recent addition to the plugins by Neural DSP and it's great to see it included.

Hi Leo. My guess is Neural added the pitch shifter for gigging metal guitarists and beginners to instantly transpose to the key of any song. I would prefer personally another capture block to use captured pedals in front of the amp captures. Ciao????Dave

Well, I was hating on NDSP for the Nano Cortex anyway, since they manage to once again miss their market.
If this was a "plugin-player" plus some bread n butter amps and effects, this would've been way more interesting.
If I only need a profile player, I buy a Tonex One instead of a NQC. No need for such an expensive device with no real benefit.
No other channel I've found in >10 years looks at guitar gear in this much technical and pragmatic detail. Superb.

As far as the null test the results difference are negligible. The problem with null test they only tell you there is a difference from the original but not how. In other words if both units are adding a little noise while training that is in the 18k-20K hz range or lower like 50-100 hz, those differences are going to be inaudible. Which means that even thought they don't pass a perfect null test the reality is in a blind A/B/C test it would be impossible to hear the difference because the original amp didn't reproduce any of those frequencies and the modeling pedals noise added are in frequency ranges that are not going to be heard especially at the -33 to -35 LUFS. So they should all sound exactly the same, and in a real blind test no one would be able to consistently tell the difference between any of the three.
