Review Demo – TC Electronic BH800

Bassists have long been told that bigger is better. More cabs, more tubes, and more watts will announce your entrance like Thor’s hammer. The problem is that, well, somebody has to carry all that stuff.
Thankfully, manufacturers have been listening to hunched-over, sore-armed bassists weary of hauling refrigerator-sized rigs, and they’re responding with lighter cabs and smaller heads that boast the same power and features as their big brothers. TC Electronics’ BH800 is a perfect example: It’s a functional, cost-effective, and great-sounding amp that can fit in your backpack, but still bring the thunder to big rooms.
Rumble in the Jungle
The BH800 takes the most popular features from its predecessor, the BH250 bass head, and expands on them with increased depth and range—and a whopping 800 watts of class-D power. The head has gained a little weight (6.4 pounds versus 4.5 for the BH250), but it offers far greater air-moving potential.
The amp is housed in a rugged metal chassis with a scarlet faceplate. Its controls are simple: gain, 4-band EQ, TonePrint controls (more on these shortly), mute toggle, and master volume. The front side also houses a bright, easy-to-use onboard tuner.
The back panel is primed for plenty, with a single 4 ohm (minimum) out, a USB port for uploading firmware and TonePrints, an 1/8″ auxiliary in, an 1/8″ headphone jack that mutes the speaker when used, and a 1/4″ jack for the optional Switch-3 pedal. (The Switch-3 controls the mute function and TonePrint switcher, and turns TonePrints on and off.) There’s also a balanced output with a mini-toggle to select a post- or pre-EQ direct signal.

Looks like you are running your gain too low my man. Better sounds to be had from this little beauty.
How stupid to make all that noise transmitting the data via pickups?..point at the amp and do it direct quietly?.
How can I plug in two cabinets in parallel, I see only one output in the back?
Class Ds are coming of age. I've played a couple that really kick. As far as how deep something can play is more dependent on the speakers and cabinets. A deep E slightly above 40 Hz. A deep A is obviously lower than that. Frequency response is usually – 3 dB. Frequency range is usually – 10 dB. Many 10" speaker cabs go down to about 55 – 3 dB, and 40 -10 db. Some go deeper. If you have another cabinet that can hit 30 db -3 DB, it will play deeper than 55 Hz -3dB. Measurements are measurements. Many bands now use the stage amp for a monitor and run straight into the PA. Geddy Lee doesn't even bother with a stage amp anymore.
Ronny OnBass you say that class D has a long way to go for pro use. Sure, that's why class D now dominates the pro sound reinforcement market where these class d amps you call wimpy push punishing bass through subs inside huge arenas and outdoor venues at SPL's us lowly Bassists can only dream about. I get it that you're a fan of big iron analog heads. Nothing wrong with that. But to say that class D is an inferior product that can't deliver the high power goods is just analog fanboi trolling.
Can you tell us more about that Fender bass?
Keep the amp, I'll take that bass.
Steve Cook, what model Fender is that P bass? Is that some kinda Customshop P? Great sounding bass!
I love watching slightly "bitter beer face" take over when he turns up the second tone print. LOL!! Rawk on, Steve!! Also, why doesn't he do a "this is what's in my signal chain" thing like John does? I, too, would be curious about his rig.
hi i noticed that you are playing through an Aguilar cab and not tc ? would you say they have a better sound, Ive actually got Rh 450 with rs210 cab but want some more bottom end, what would you recommend, cheers rob from warm and sunny England
What if you use alternate tunings?
Sweet, sweet P bass! Battle scarred powerhouse!
that is a doooope bass
Weirdest shit ever… I want it!!
is it weird that i would pay more for this same amp without the toneprints?
i would have bought a tc amp long ago but not being able to use both tone prints at the same time is dumb and kills the amp for me
