The best solo amp settings you’re not using–Fender Deluxe Reverb edition!

This is one of my absolute favorite ways to track a solo or other punchy higher-gain guitar part. If you’re like me and don’t want to blow your (or your neighbors’) ears out, you’ll need to run an extension cab in an isolated room or use a load box like an OX Amp Top Box. I talk about this setting and more in my Deluxe Reverb video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7aM_Ls-cAE). This setting is perfect for loads of sustain and articulate, dynamic gain. It’s like what I wish every overdrive pedal sounds like. Enjoy!

0:00 Welcome! Let’s revisit one of my favorite settings for a Fender amp
0:40 I know most of us are in situations where we can’t just crank a Deluxe up to 10
1:10 Shoutout to Marty @ MacMillan guitars!
1:51 Let’s lay some solos! I’m going to use 3 different guitars…
3:07 But wait, there’s more! 🙂
4:02 Enough about t shirts; let’s get to these solos!
4:41 Why I’m used to wearing cans whenever I’m recording guitar.
6:24 SOLO 1: ’55 Tele
10:09 SOLO 2: Wildwood spec R5 Goldtop
11:27 Back it up and listen to the dynamics that are still available to us at these amp settings.
12:14 This setting works for lots of Fender amps!
13:07 SOLO 3: ’69 LP Custom

  • These settings work for a wide variety of 60s and 70s Fender amps: Deluxe reverb, Princeton reverb, Vibrolux, Pro, Bandmaster, Bassman (I've tried it on 6G6-B and AB165 circuits). Even Champs! Though those sound a bit rattier, for lack of a better word.

Despite the treble being on 10 and the bass being all the way down, it has a full midrange to it. These amps get their mids as you turn them up. I know most of us have volume constraints; this is why I often plug it into my OX box or Two Notes Torpedo. I don't want my neighbors to hate me, so I only run my cabs wide open in the garage during working hours. I would very much NOT recommend standing in front of your amp cranked all the way up without hearing protection. Cheers!

  • Man that solo tone is sweet! For delay settings, do you typically have your repeats at a set delay time, or are you setting to the BPM of the song?

  • I’m curious about your 69 Custom. Does it have a refret? You must to do all those bends? I have a 73 Custom and it has the original fretless wonder frets, super low. Love your channel!

  • I know it would not fit in the mix as well but i bet that would sound glorious through a 3/4 or ported cab . Shoulda never sold my old SF

  • Nice demo Justin. I like the sounds you are getting out of the Deluxe Reverb. How much would you attribute to the tubes and what tubes are in it? I may have to try the Warehouse speaker.

  • Les Paul standards have rosewood fingerboards the necks are made of mahogany. they do not have mahogany fretboards. They did make a short run of LP CUSTOMS in the ,80s' with Maple fingerboards.
    I once owned one.

  • I'm sure that you are aware but just count the turns on the adjustment screws in case you want to put it back how it was originally!

  • Does anybody tried this in a hot rod deluxe? I did and it sounds really really good but I'm not sure how to set the presence and mid knobs. Any EQ ideas?

  • Justin, I love your videos and your content! I‘m a young Swiss guitarist and I‘m trying to get more session work -> your videos are very helpful and inspirational! Thanks for keeping up the good work!????????

  • What a sound! And dynamics are just the best part, to my ears at least… that’s the type of dynamics I am personally always looking for in a pedal but not sure I got anywhere close yet (don’t have the luxury of playing through a cranked amp at the moment). Thank you for the video!

  • Man that Deluxe is so good! I also love the tips on not using so much grease on your rhythm tracks. They do sound better without.
I’m still so envious of your job. I teach guitar and play locally for a living but always wanted to do sessions. Here in Saskatoon, there isn’t as much work as Nashville so studio work is really hard to come by.
Thanks again for a great video.

  • After watching your other video in which you are wearing the T Shirt with the settings on it, I picked up on these settings! Thought I'd give them a try and found great results riding the volume control on a strat down to between 3 and 5 cleaning up on the neck and then blistering on the bridge at 10. Only found this video when I googled where I could get the T Shirt from. Thanks for the settings, great advice

  • Wow… I found this video a few days ago while researching a good pedal to get some gain with my ‘64 Deluxe. Fast forward: tonight as I’m sitting playing on my sofa I realized I have a Captor X 10 feet away. I cannot wait to record a video with the DR cranked into the Captor with a TS-9 as a boost on and off. I’m glad I found your channel! Love your stuff.

  • I have been using this setting for many years. It’s a “trick” I seen Derek trucks using on his super reverbs. It’s a set it and forget it setting – so I placed the whole amp into the bedroom and let the sound come from the big gap under the door. BEST TONE ever… I feel it’s unmatched by a pedal.
Great videos and great playing man.
    I’m tuning in
