The Dorian Mode

The Dorian mode is the second mode of the major scale, often used in jazz, rock, and other genres for its minor quality with a slightly brighter sound than the natural minor scale.

To create the Dorian mode, take the second degree of any major scale and use that note as your new tonic.

C major scale: C D E F G A B

D Dorian mode (starting from D, the second degree of C major): D E F G A B C

Compared to the natural minor scale, the Dorian mode has a raised (or major) 6th.
