Best Small Jazz Box? D’Angelico SS Soho vs Ibanez GB10 George Benson

What is the best small jazz box? Is it the D’Angelico Excel SS Soho or the Ibanez GB10 George Benson? The D’Angelico Excel SS Soho or the Ibanez GB10 are both thin hollowbody guitars and both are able to achieve a great, jazz tone!

  • nice playing!
I own a GB10 from 1979, lately it's my main guitar, if I have to play standing up. And I have a d'Angelio SS Excel, from around 2018, as a spare guitar.
Both great guitars and comfortable to play. They have a good jazz tone, and i can blend in some treble if i need to play funky comping or something.

Is there a big difference between SS Excel and SS Soho, tonewise?

  • Nice solo. I had a Johnny Smith 69 I bought from Alex Music w the tags on it. Had to sell it but years later picked up a GB10 which I really enjoy

  • Give me any $$$…I'll make it sound like garbage lol. The magic is on the soul of the guitar player

  • I bought a new D angelico SS, Black with gold trim. It's simi-hollow and it sounds like crap. I can't get a good tone. It just doesn't have that sweet spot.

  • To my personal taste I liked D’Angelico Excel SS Soho more than GB10, thou I have two GB10's from early 80s and early 90s, which sound very different to each other.

  • Hi Rich and Wes, heard Rich talking about the Howard Roberts Fusion. I have one, a '98 Fusion III. Not as jazzy as a Heritage but a good all-rounder, like a 335. Congrats on picking one up! Looking forward to hear you talk about it.

  • I designed the Soho to create "air & breath" in the tone in much the same my way as L5 and Marchione guitars. The chamber resonates with depth and warmth far beyond that of any Ibanez guitars from that line… and I've played all of George's guitars. Perhaps we could talk more about the amazing realm of pure tone the guitar will allow us to create & less about the neck dimensions… lol. I appreciate you & your show. I also love your playing & I am grateful for your presence in the Jazz Guitar universe & for shining a spotlight on my guitar.
    Thank you!!

  • Once we roll excessive brightness off, most guitars become suitable for Jazz. The mother instrument not to be forgotten, is the nylon string Classic design. Clean clear fundamental tone, rules the roost. Keep safe.

  • Great review Rich! I have a GB10 and bought a red Soho Mark Whitfield when they first came out, and was excited about build specs and 25.0" scale length. After not a lot of time, I found the thinner-wider-flatter neck and neck-dive on the Soho made it a no go for me and I sold it. But, I still have my GB10.

  • Rich you make that soho sound nicer than anyone else on the internet. Got to try one some time back but the super flat fretboard killed my wrist. Same reason i cant play my dangelico DH for more than five minutes without having to ice my hand for a week.

  • Do you write your own arrangements, if so do have them available for purchase. If not what resource for arrangements do you use?

  • Doug Rainey had a Ibanez GB20. I think it was a custom guitar with a p90. He had a great show about legendary Jazz guitarists with norvegian Torgeir Stubo at nrk television, here in Norway. He was one of the the best Bebop players I think. Greeting from Norway

  • when you play, are you counting or singing the sounds quietly to yourself? I notice many players move their lips almost if they are chewing. I'm new to jazz but I love it
