  • I never seen hate for Tube Screamers until Rhett Shull said he hates them, then suddenly it's a bad pedal to people online.

  • The TS is my favorite boost…pairs well with rats and works on clean and dirty amps….if someone hates the TS its because of their lack of intimate tonal knowledge of this pedal.

  • It came out in the late 70s, and was prolific in the 80's. Everybody had one but few used it effectively including me.

  • I've had a tube screamer in my board several times. I got one now, I use it to tighten up the gain on my amp. Sounds great for a baseline tone. Not for everyone, but man I get a great snarl without too much gain. I really dig it. Add a touch of delay and it is pure awesome.

  • I think people are just tired of the non stop “high end” recreations of an already affordable pedal.

  • I wouldn’t say I hate TS but I’ve never liked them. They seem to ‘blur’ the guitar sound, like there’s less clarity when playing chords and less ‘sparkle’ in the top end.

The best TS I ever played was the (old) reissue 808. That one sounded good for playing leads, which imo is really the only thing a TS is useful for—single note leads for blues style. I just don’t have much use for that.

  • Thank you! I love my Maxon 808! Whet is better than a tubescreamer? Two of them! SRV played one Into another! Check out Jacques Pedals from France! His Version of the TS can be doubled wirh a little switch!!????

  • Very late to the Tube Screamer party, but I'm very onboard with it now. All sorts of reasons not to like one, but I listen with my own ears.

  • I was unaware that anyone hates the Tube Screamer. Some people may not use them, and those that do may disagree of which version they prefer, but it's one of the most ubiquitous pedals of all time. It's like saying Les Paul (or Strat) – why all the hate?

  • Single coils into a fender amp. These things were meant for bright sounding equipment to round then out. If u play live u also know how well these cut through the mix. I’ve played gigs thinking I will use my new whatever but halfway through it’s the 808 because I can actually hear it in the mix

  • Built like a tank, painted with a yucky green and it comes in a flimsy box. But this little gem is a must for any pedal-board.

  • Ever double-track record guitar with some amp distortion? When I have I've gotten a pleasant upper-mids crispiness added to my base tone. Not ice-picky. Not shrill. Pleasant. When I boost an overdriven amp with a TS-808 I get a very similar EQ profile. Overdrive on 0 or just barely cracked, Level maxed out, Tone a little under halfway. There it is, that pleasant crispiness. And it'll tighten up bass freq's that have gotten flubby, as well. I love it. And it works in front of a wide variety of amps, something I can't say for every overdrive, even really good, expensive ones.
It has to be the TS-808, though. The TS-9 doesn't do it for me. Too smooth, not crispy enough. Doesn't firm up the bass as well, either. TS-808 only.
I don't get people who hate the TS-808. It's not "transparent?" So what? It's an improvement. I suspect they're trying to get it to really sound like a tube amp distorting by sticking it in front of a clean amp and stomping on it for a "distortion channel." It's not too great at that. It just enhances distortion already happening in the amp.
When Ibanez came out with the TS-808 reissue I got one after reading that in blind testing its sound was indistinguishable from an original from the early Eighties. All the ones I've gotten have sounded the same within the tolerances of electronic components. A little tweak of this or that knob might be required to get any two to sound near-identical, but they've all sounded good, they've all done that thing. The pleasant crispiness thing.
    That's my take, anyway.

  • People just take all their opinions from uncle Larry on this kinda stuff. Usually not a bad strategy but I agree with you, in the right context it sounds great

  • They sound good with single coils and fender amps because they fill in the missing midrange frequencies. You shouldn't use a lot of gain if you use humbuckers.

  • I don’t hate it but I’m not a fan. The one I bought had grounding issues and wasn’t very good at all. Instead, I use the boss super od, which the tube screamer was designed after( so I heard). The super od is perfect for me

  • From Leo; I have been using a tubescreamer into a twin since the 1980's. I find it pretty easy to adjust it for good tones. People that dime every knob are probably not happy with them. It takes a little time to learn. You have a knack for getting great tones from gear. I have heard you get great tones from a VOX AC. I never spent enough time to learn that amp, but it shows that learning the controls is almost as important as learning the riffs. Good job!

  • I hear the opposite, that they revolutionized the pedal market, that they are the best. What annoys me is that everyone forgets the real original, the OD-1 by BOSS, which I think is the real king.

  • Didn’t realize there was hate for the TS. Does need to be paired with the right amp though— it adds a lot of mids to my ear, so blackface Fenders ideal, Marshall and vox maybe less so.

The TS didn’t work well with my Ghia for what it’s worth.

  • They are still selling and in more or less every store I go to.

And in case you dislike something do not hate it but just ignore and save you energy for making peanut butter sandwiches.

  • I’ve noticed that switching guitars, and/or switching amps, can make a pedal sound or behave a lot differently. I think a lot of people don’t give equipment enough time; maybe they expect a pedal to be some magic box with no bad tones, or the gain should be maxed, etc

I have never played a regular tube screamer. I bought a fulltone fulldrive a long time ago, found out later that it’s based on the TS, and then decided I probably don’t need one. I absolutely love my Fulldrive; it’s almost always on
