  • To those hearing a modulation/chorus effect on my recording, I can only assume that it's some sort of unwanted by-product of the fairly drastic equalisation applied in an attempt and replicate the unique EQ curve/phasing qualities the original guitar track has. As I say at 7:40, I don't really feel that I got particularly close to 'nailing it' but that's part of the fun. If Mark and Neil Dorfsman couldn't do it a fortnight later, what hope have I got? ????

  • The original tone is dryer than yours, maybe a bit less chorus? Well done though, a great insight…

  • the Les Paul he recorded that song with was an early 80's Prehistoric model 59 re-issue. It was sold at auction for a remarkable fortune!!!!!! not a P-90 pickup…… I can definitely hear that modulation and it definitely effects the outcome.

  • The out of phase middle position on the Gibson les Paul wasent in the actuall guitar it was the microphone position on the Marshall 4×12 cabinet in the studio. That’s the phasing sound that you cannot recreate. His les Paul was a Gibson 1983 59’ pre historic reissue in Cherry Sunburst with both 59’ style pickups in the actual guitar. So that’s the out of phase sound and the money for nothing guitar you hear is that 59’ reissue les Paul :).

  • Have you seen Phil X EXACTLY getting the Van Halen Unchained sound. I think he spent a few days trying to dial it in including considering if EVH used his SG with the Horn cutoff but not willing to mutilate his Guitar he kept tweaking!

I think he got it 99.995% correct! It's AMAZING!

  • To this day Knopfler says he's still chasing that tone and has never been able to replicate it accurately!

  • One can get a pretty good MFN tone with a Strat on pos 2 (bridge / middle) with the tone all the way down through a moderately driven Marshall (I use JCM900 into a 1960 cab).

  • Alright, before i watch this, just knowing what was popular at the time of that song….i may be off by a few years, but i hope not. I could research the date it came out, but thats cheating.
Im gonna say its a cocked wah, rockman distortion generator, and some kind of chorus, maybe even the rockman chorus?? But im sure im dead wrong, im bout to watch and find out

Edit:: Just before i find out, maybe not an actual wah, maybe just heavily eq’d to get cocked wah sound

  • Good job Chris ???????????? You definitely came close enough. I just wish you´d play some more, so we could enjoy that great tone for more than a few seconds 🙂 I used to try and find the guitar tones from ZZ-Top, in the "Eliminator/Afterburner/Recycler-Era" but it´s just impossible with the synth/computer stuff they used.. Guess "close enough" is a great goal in it self 🙂

  • I think I speak for everyone, I never want to be told exactly how he got the tone. Arguably the best part of it is the mystery behind it
