Simmons Drum Amp Review: DA2112 – DA2110 – DA2108
Today I’m reviewing a new line of drum amps from Simmons. The DA2112, the DA2110, and the DA2108. Is this new generation of drum amps worth buying? let’s jump into the pros and the cons.

Can I connect a microphone there? In the case I can.. I should use a mixer?
Does these amps and speakers work with acoustic drums?
Everything is talking about electronic drums
It’s like no one is talking about how to amplify acoustic drums
90% of the people I hang around don’t play electric drums. We play acoustic drums. 8:28
Good review, very helpful for me!
I just got the DA2112 included with a used set of Alesis Surge drums. I am not sure if it has enough push for a small gig or not. Overall he is dead on this description for this amp. It does sound pretty good but I still find myself having trouble from keeping it clipping. ( Yes I know,,back the low freqs off ) I think the secret here is to run two of these for a small live gig performance of which I will probably do that even if my kit never sees the light of day. Life long acoustic drummer I am. Bought this set up for home practice in the first place which is great! Bottom line just buy the DA2112 and be done with it or buy two. The options by far, are great on the DA2112.
Hi Justin, thanks for the review. Your opinion is the DA2112 is “Middle of the Road”. What Drum Amp would you say is top end and best quality sound? Tnx.
Roland kits don't sound great on them. I actually think the older Simmons amps are significantly better. Much louder and clearer.
I bought a DA2110 for a small gig and it was woefully underpowered. I had to crank the volume on Titan 50 module and on the amp to max and it still wasn't loud enough. I'm not convinced the DA2112 will be much better so does anyone have a recommendation for an amp or powered speaker with some serious punch? Would like to keep it simple (single unit) for small gigs.
I play edrums and guitar. Ideally, i would love to get 1 speaker that works with both. Will any 12 inch FRFR speaker be able to do this?
Hi Justin, i'm quite confused with your sentence saying that if you have old drum module without bluetooth you can connect those simmons sprakers throuh built in bluetooth. If the drum module doesn't have bluetooth emiter how is it possible? 0:59
I just have A SINGLE 2112 amp that I just bought . I turn the td 30 full blast and the 2112 full blast and it is more than load enough for practice but I cant imagine in cutting through the mix with a band. What gives? Strangely enough I connect the bluetooth and its got about 25% more volume. I have to turn that down. All the kits are full volume on the Roland.
Great video , thank you for sharing Sir
do these have any advantage over their similarly powered roland kc model keyboard amp?
Hey Justin thanks, as always, for the great videos. I got 1 DA2112 to try out and it does not seem very loud at all. I mean its loud enough at home when practicing but live (just a small party in my back yard)….I have to max it out to get anything and cover the tapping sound on my pads. It just seems weak to me…maybe I'm missing something. I thought, well I better get a second one and a sub woofer if I'm going to take this into clubs or events. I'm just worried I'll sink more into these and not get quite what I want. Is there a way these can be amplified more? Will a 2nd one with a sub woofer improve the volume/power? I don't need anything super powerful but it does need to hold up to at least my club gigs. Thoughts or suggestions would be very helpful in making my next move. Thanks for any feedback you can provide.
7:14 – Haha, this is where I come in. I play electric drums. I am also an self proclaimed 'audiophile' where I am critical about sound quality, especially in live performance. There isn't a speaker that is commercially produced that gives drummers high quality without having to buy a complete JBL multi-component system. I managed to do it. Building two cabinets the size of most Peavy and JBL cabinets, I configured a custom that would satisfy even the most critical drummer or sound engineer. Addressing this video and the Simmons products, this was an honest, spot-on opinion of something any drummer can go out and buy, and have it be a decent product. I like how you compiled the comparisons, it was EZ and relatable.
I have a pair of the 12" version and I love them. I got lucky though, I bought an electronic set and one Simmons speaker. Musicians Friend screwed me over on the delivery time over and over, so eventually they made it right by giving me the second amp for no cost. So I got both of them for only $309 total.
Hi there, anyone tried 2 of the 8inch ones together?enough bass?
Why do you think Simmons has EQ controls but the Alesis 12 doesn’t? Is there a massive advantage. Will be buying one in the next few weeks.
So, I'm just curious. If I needed an amp to act as a monitor during live shows and only needed amplification for some hybrid drumming effects (a few Rolands mounted on an acoustic kit to add effects), would the 2108 be enough?
Everyone on your facebook group insists these drum monitors all sound like crap. I just want to avoid having to get a mixer and I'm so confused as to what I can get that will sound okay for home and jam use without breaking the bank.
Do you think the DA2112 is better sounding than the DA2012B?
@65 Drums You mentioned it was "mid" in terms of quality, not pro… what is an example of "pro" ? Thanks
Well fudge, I bought the da2012b a year ago and shoulda got this instead. I wish I had the controls on the front side
has anyone tried connecting a sound mixer on this and put some mics and guitars on it?
I'd love to see a video on how to quickly set up a kit exactly the way you took it down. What memory locks, etc., are available and worth buying, and any other tips.
I can't figure out why I'm not hearing my Yamaha EAD 10 through my Simmons drum module any suggestions I tried switching the cables around. THANKS ?
I’d like to pick your brain about the best way to go from module to amp for optimal sound. I have the new DM10 and just bought the 2112.
Is something else required besides the power cord to turn this thing on? Just got the 2108 and it will not power on. Voltage is set correctly to my outlets. No power light indicators, you think it’s dead on arrival? I have the brain of e kit running a 1/4” mono to mono input on back of speaker. No power.
Do you recommend a wedge drum amp, (specifically the Roland PM200) or a pair of studio monitors, like Yamaha HS8s?
I have ZERO confidence in anything with the Simmons name on it lately. Have you EVER played a Simmons kit where all the triggers operated smoothly and as expected? So much hot spotting, intermittence or just plain old DYING after a few hours of use. Also, Simmons is now owned by the holding company (Ares Management) that owns now bankrupt Guitar Center, so I see that whole distribution/manufacturing channel going away sooner or later. I think Behringer makes the Simmonds drum aps.
They are rebranded Harbingers with a custom front end. The subwoofer is identical with no modifications except a different front grill. If you like the Harbinger sound this is what you'll get. Similarly the Alesis are rebranded Altos
Always very thorough reviews and to-the-point. TY!
The flagship speakers headphone
Out selector is a useful feature. But you made no mention for the reason for the headphone out selection.
I believe that the selection is when the a click track is used. So that only the headphone output and not the main output will have the click track.
Grateful for your insightful and honest reviews, Justin. I read a review from a user forum suggesting the 2112 was subpar to the 2012; since you’ve reviewed both, can you offer any general opinion of the two, whether flat or dialed-in (optimally for each specifically) EQ is applied?
This review is pretty spot on. The 8 inch speaker version is pretty mediocre. I bought one, played it for about 10 minutes. Then, boxed it back up and returned it for another Headrush FRFR 108 which is about 30 dollars more, but so much better quality.
Is this something I'd want if I'm only triggering my bass drum?
I am considering either the Alesis Strike 8 amp or the Simmons DA2108 amp to be used for practice and as an onstage personal monitor. I've watched both of your videos and was curious which in your opinion would be a better fit for this role? When playing live it would not be my primary source of amplification (I go through the house pa) so I don't need anything big.
Any opinion which is better: Simmons 2112 or Alesis Strike Amp 12? They're the exact same price. Simmons has more features (Bluetooth, etc.), but which sounds best?
I saw a comment in another review that stated that the simmons da2112 is not as powerful as its predecessor, the simmons da2012. What is your opinion on that? I know you've had both now. I was going to get one of the 2112's to pair up with my 2012, but now I'm wondering if i should just get another 2012. Thanks!
I went with the DA2112 and like it. Like you said, it takes time to EQ everything or it sounds pretty lifeless out of the box. I also like that I can use it as a general PA speaker for music or other things.
That direct-out jack on the back looks like it is intended to be the subwoofer connection, but I don't see any frequency selectors. Is the Simmons still trying to reproduce all the frequencies, including the ones it is sending to the sub?
Why Simmons monitor is not sold in Europe?..
