Marshall YJM100 Guitar Amp Review Inside and Out Close up
Marshall YJM100 Guitar amp review both inside and out and close up. My close up review of the YJM100 Marshall Yngwie J Malmsteen amplifier – a review of INSIDE the amp and also what the head comes with. This is a no holds barred review of the amp as it came out of the box freshly delivered just hours before. Well how was this amp that costs here in the UK £1515.00? is it really filled with goodies and more to the point is it worth the money? What about design and quality – something no one talks about? especially the dealers…
Forget what you have read before or seen in demos from dealers with guitar whizz guys everywhere. NONE tell you the way it is! That’s whats different about reviews from www.tonymckenzie.com I NEVER lie or distort the review in favour of sales and have nothing to gain except to help other musicians see the way it really is with musical equipment when you buy it. I finance it all personally!
This is PART ONE of the review. My second video will show the amp in action – but not as a Yngwie clone. Firstly I’m no Yng clone – and probably neither are you so its important to know what this amp is like without that style of playing.
So no apologies for my differing styles of part two. Actually I love Yng and have been a massive fan since the ‘marching out’ days… simply one of the best guys there is on a Fender Strat… I wish I could play it like that – but never will be able to…
But this really is an expensive amp and you do want to know what you are buying? right? Then watch this video because as well as seeing whats in the amp under the bonnet for real, I’ll tell you exactly what I received and about quality issues on this particular amp right out of the box.
I talk about some of the things I found at the end of the video and anyone wanting a YJM100 should really listen to that because I talk about other things I found on this amp that are not in the main video.
I don’t try in this video to show the sounds – that’s the next video – but in that video you can rest assured that I don’t try and blow out the windows – that’s for other reviewers with shops to do 🙂 (really there was no point in that one) so Ill refrain from copying it forever. Like I said, most of us are not Malmsteen!
For a really long and in depth review of this YJM100 Marshall amp hop over to https://tonymckenzie.com/marshall-yjm100-malmsteen-guitar-amplifier-inside-and-out-review.htm for a complete unbiased no bull review of the Yngwie J Malmsteen amp. That review will NEVER be on YouTube!
There are loads of other reviews on my website too – including, other Marshall, Mesa, Engl, Splawn, V series and soon to be Axe-FX Version two (that should be fun).

Glad to see you respected yngwie ????????
The scratch shouldn't be there, I get it, however I would like to say that your attitude before and after playing that amp is night and day ha, you sounded so excited and shaken after! Good video!
"Alot of good, alot of bad"
A perfect amplifier for Yngwie then, alot of good and alot of bad lol
I AM LATE TO THIS PARTY BUT TONY AS USUAL GREAT JOB….I AM I TALKS WITH AN AMP BUILDER I WILL POST ON ONE OF YOUR MORE RECENT OFFERINGS.
Old video but thanks !
9:22 usually Marshall uses a "balanced" 12ax7 tube for the phase inverter (and it gets the shield)
Hello Tony how did you like this amp compaired to the 1959 slp HW? Tone wise they are quite different. In this day and age there are better boosters than the in the amp and also better load boxes etc than the power scaling in the amp.
Is that head comes with cabinet

It's been quite a few years since this review, but it is still THE source for a tour of this extraordinary amp – truly the end of an era for Marshall!
Tony, please tell us if you still have & enjoy this YJM. I still have mine, and despite gigs & travel, it has been kept in NOS condition and has NOT had any failure of any kind thus far, save for one 6CA7 that quit (for which the YJM dutifully bypassed).
we meet again…Seems Santiago has an answer for everything negative about his amps! I've read a lot of reviews where he seems to jump in every forum out there down playing every problem as buyers fault. One thing I did notice about the amp in your vid,is it shares a potentially dangerous one as in my jvm…The fuses ARE WAY TO CLOSE TO THOSE HIGH VOLTAGE CAPS..Now you know some youngster who knows nothing about lethal voltages is going to put his little heavy metal fingers in there and get a shocking surprise while doing a simple fuse change…which lately seems to be a trend with modern marshalls, blown fuses.
50% of the load on a screw is applied to the first thread. 90% on the first three threads. "Short" thread is by no means weak or weaker than a long thread.
ENGL German engineering destroys Marshall these days.
Hey Tony, has your opinion of this amp changed considering all the defects & complaints that have been posted on the net…production of this amp didn't seem to last long…what does that tell us ???
I was surprised by the poor quality control, my first Marshall was a JCM 800 from way back in 1981 …. Nice review thanks
Looks like Beheringer stuff… what a shame…look inside an old Marshall and think
About which one is a real amp… cheers
What, no demo? You TEASE!
Does this thing really sound like a plexi? The problem with all these gear companies is that they put out something good and then they pull it before you get a chance to suss it out and decide you want one. Guess I'll just have to find one secondhand.
Pity I can't reply to Olaf directly… it was made in Sunny England at the Marshall Factory. I have seen them coming off the line myself. But maybe yours is Chinese LOL.
Hey people,
are they for real?? 1500 gbp for this cheaply made hybrid amp????
not a chance in hell…. for the same money I can buy me a nice hand made REAL TUBE amp with NO DSP in it…. in fact there are many Fender 78'-79' Super reverb, Mesa and Peavey Classic 50/100 amps which sound better than this one and ARE hand made, point to point…. no pc board crap, no digital crap… straight tube sound….. im not about to fork out 1500 gbp to sponsor YJM…. sorry to offend anyone who bought one, but thats my opinion. (and im a huge YJM fan, but I doubt he traded in his 74' plexi's for this one…..)
Excellent detailed review. This helped me out a lot in making my mind up to buy a YJM. From one Tony to another, thanks 😀
Hi tony, very thorough and in depth review of the yjm100 . Check out some of my playing , I have a video playing this amp at very low volumes with the following settings :attenuation 8:00 with boost volume on.max with gain at around 3ish . Im using a vintage modern squier strat . Great sound !
Thank's Tony for the information and the quick reply to my previous message. I will try one of those isolators that you mentioned that you used on the g- system. Thank You.
Hello Tony. I have a Ynjvie Malmsteen Amp Head and was wondering if you know why there is no control button on the fx loop send and return loop to set up for different effects, like – 10 for stomp boxes and + 4 for rack units and digital processors. I have a Eventide Time Factor delay unit and I get a little bit of hum when I engage the fx loop to use this effect. I appreciate any comments regarding this concern and really like to watch you're video demonstrations here on You Tube. Thank You,
all power transistors in power supply should be heat sinked especialy the voltage regulators and thay get hotter when amp is cranked fact
Anytime, dude!
…could review one of those as well sometime!
Cheers!
No problem buddy! You definitley deserve them! By the way, have you ever heard of Wizard Amps? AC/DC uses those instead of Plexis! Wizard Amps are based in Canada and you an only buy them directly through their website! They are "tuned Marshalls" how I like to call them. Very expensive though! Rickey Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd uses them. He uses the Vintage Classic (basically a 1959 SLP, that why I bought a YJM, cause' I couldn't afford a Wizard and the YJM is as good :-P) Would be cool if you
Great review, Tony! I think, it's great that you put so much effort in those reviews and you just tell the truth about those amps. You're honest to all the people watching and not like a lot of other guys who are probably getting paid by Marshall to review every amp as an awesome one! Btw, I recently bought a YJM and I can't wait til it gets here! 🙂
Cheers!
Tony, I can not believe how different this head looks inside compared to the prettier hand wired completely with none of the little or bigger white plastic connectors that you see in every pc. This amp looks sterile and ugly, it may be much easier to work on and repair but. I'm getting ready to build a Marshall 65 45W clone and very excited about it too. ONly for a Yngwie type concert would one need this animal, to big to play even in a very large house.
It is pretty.
ok thanks 🙂
If you don't have the time, a gear tour would also be brilliant!
Finally, I have just bought a Mesa Mini Rectifier and would like to be able to drive the power amp at low volumes so I was thinking of getting a tube screamer, would you recommend the TS808 or TS9?
thank you for replying, would it be possible for you to do a shootout between some high end amps because you're collection is beautiful!
Sorry I don't know anything about plexis but I love them, what is the point of the four inputs and how you wire them up?
well once you opened the thing up I said Hell NO! Iv'e seen so many amps made like this ribbon cables delicate pots thin circuit boards caps with hot glue LOL ya maybe in a studio not for the road fuses inside, disassemble to change it? LOL the English were being bombed by Hitler we walked in and destroyed Germany! just like a crate stealth chassis look at point to point amps like marsha splawn metro there are EL34 higains out there NO disrespect Jim Marshall & YJM but after seeing this & 1799$
all ways makes me laugh that the yjm signature amp is 100 watts yet yngwie plays through a 50 watt head himself lol
well, guess what?! yeap.. I'm a proud Marshall YJM 100 owner! 🙂
best "feature" of this amp hands down…. TONE!
now.. must… get.. back.. to my Marshall.. c ya!!!
Tony..one more question..you are using the 1960B cabinet. Is that the standard cab loaded with the G12 speakers or are you using the vintage cab (1960BV)?
Tony..love your videos. Can you get the classic Van Halen tone with the YJM?.. and to quote you, "Maybe it will..maybe it won't?" 😉
Friggin true… 🙂 we won't live for ever 🙂 So… yeah ur bloody right! 🙂 I guess I'll just add another weapon of mass destruction to the arsenal…
