  • Slight revision to my original post. After going to my local shop and doing a tonal side by side…the Katana was leaps better sounding than the Debut.

  • Sorry but all of them sounds like crap to me. I would go to gig with a Victory or another real amp and, if the venue is small, switch into 5watts attenuator

  • Watched a couple times and have to go with the Blackstar and Katana in the lead. Laney had a nice clean but the balance between cleans and dirties was better on those two…more well rounded. Ironically I wasn't very impressive by the HiWatt. The clean was alright, the dirty was ????. The aesthetics of it are clunky to me. I may be in the minority but I prefer my controls on the top of my amp. As I've always used an amp stand I've never took issue to getting to my controls and the look is much simpler.

  • The car comparisons were great, he's right you can drive a stake through the engine on a Toyota and that bitch will still start and get you to work everyday. ????

  • I love that these manufacturers are making analog amps without digital modeling or effects. It’s great to have a simple amp if you want a pedal platform

  • I have the lionheart pedal and I’m thinking of grabbing this Laney for a backup…the Quayle lionheart pedal is phenomenal for what it is…and it’s nice that a company actually thought of us blues and roots guys…with bad backs!!! lol!!! One thing I thing I can say is a compressor makes the amp play as good or better then a lot of tube amps I’ve owned…or maybe it’s just my compressor…pedal on knobs at zero…and these become magic…

  • Pleaseeeee. Could you do a Blackstar Debut 50r (should be around 180-200 pounds) and a few speaker upgrades? Beacause, thats what i have in mind ahaha. But if you want to experiment with the 100r go forwards.
    Nice Video.
Also, Fender champion II are out for a while…. :^)

  • All things considered, sound, versatility, portability and affordability for me it's the Boss Katana everyday and twice on Sunday! Your perception may vary….

  • I help operate a medium size venue and it seems the most popular amps these days are all smallish with Princeton reverbs and similar being the most often used by the really good players. As the amps are all miked into the PA they don’t need to be that loud. You do see the odd AC15 but it’s used mostly by strummers. I was a little surprised to see one really good player with a wide variety of great sounds using a Roland Blues Cube. Nobody ever seems to use emulation amps like Katanas or Line 6 etc. One player who flew in from out of state to accompany a singer had just a Strat in a gig bag, about three pedals and a tiny 10 watt Marshal solid state which we miked up. He sounded great – but , of course , he was a great player.

  • Recently ordered a Laney Super 1×12 but received a 2×12! Nearly sent it back for the correct one I ordered but in fact, being a vertical twin, it occupies the same floor area (which I'm short of..) as the 1×12 yet is still light enough to carry around. So I kept it. Very pleased with the tone it produces as I can get it close to the sound of my 30w tube combo (old Selmer Zodiac). It will also give me driven output at volumes that don't push windows out – which the tube amp cannot, though even at 1w it's still loud for home use. The extra features offered with the Super for a few quid extra make it the model to get IMO.(which I'm short of..)

  • Why does everything have to sound like Spinal Tap.
How about some Peter Green type tones.
    Some real blues sounds.

  • I would have included the Vox VT40X in this comparison, it knocked the socks off some of these amps previously!

  • I thought going in it would be Blackstar. Most power for the least money. Katania probably most versital with built in effects. I liked the Laney and the HiWatt Looks and clean tone.

  • The only one I was not impressed with was the Boss. I have owned several of their models, including the Katana II, and just can't make myself love Boss. That Hiwatt is really nice. Especially with Pete playing through it.

  • Gilmour has been using Hiwatts since at least 1972. He used the DR 103 heads and i believe he was using Sound City amps prior to 72 which was the name Hiwatt started out under .
