Rig Rundown – Red Fang
Article & photos: http://bit.ly/RedFangRR
The Portland, Oregon, rockers rolled into Nashville, and before their show at the Exit/In, guitarists Bryan Giles and David Sullivan, along with bassist Aaron Beam, spoke with PG’s Perry Bean about how a lot of their gear decisions have two common factors: Delta and keeping up with hard-hitting drummer John Sherman.
In a 2016 interview with PG, and for most of Bryan Giles guitar-playing life in Red Fang, he was seen with a heavily-modified 5-string Fender Mustang from the mid ’60s. That all changed when the band did a quick jaunt over to Europe for a few festival dates and Delta misplaced Giles’ guitars and ultimately shipped them back to the band’s HQ in Oregon. Giles, being the true professional, used his bandmate David Sullivan’s backup—the Nik Huber Krautster II you see above—and it’s been his main jammer ever since. Still not using the high-E string, Giles uses Dunlop Heavy Core strings (.014–.049) and Dunlop Tortex 1mm picks.
David Sullivan was an early rider on the Nik Huber bandwagon and his main hog right now is this single-pickup Krautster. The pickup is a Häussel VIN+ B A5 Bridge model. And like his 6-string bandmate, he uses Dunlop Heavy Core strings (but are gauged .010–.048) and Dunlop Tortex picks (.73 mm).
Bassist Aaron Beam gets all his work done with this 1986 G&L SB-1. He generally uses any brand strings that are gauged .045–.105.

Ha! I own a 100 W Beta Lead!
You would think (which I could care less about though) that the host is either on coke or speed. Jesus Christ, he talks fast and trips & stumbles & interrupts every musician he interviews. He reminds of how Greg Giraldo introduced Tom Arnold one time (Roseanne Barr's ex husband). "And Tom Arnold is here everyone (crowd laughs, claps)". Then Greg addresses him; "Tom. You twitchy spaz….".
I got a Sunn 112p alpha. It's 60w and insanely loud. Converted it to a head.
70s and 80s solidstate Peavey heads are the best…im still using mine today.never been serviced..so loud..sounds great..
I am not a fan of their music but as a musician i love their approach. Im. Gonna hunt me down a beta bass head!
as a musician, none of this detailed shite/lingo/brands matters. only the song.
I came when he ripped that beta bass
this guitar player needs to eat less chicken wings
Classic episode!!!
holy fuck that bass sound
I bought a Nik Huber because I loved the look and sound of it. Didnt know red fang used them. I had just bought a Gibson CS junior and frankly it was a $1000 guitar with $3000 namebrand. The one I got was just bad; bad wood, bad pickup, and bad fit and finish. So I bought the Nik Huber krautster II because its very junior-esqe. I can't say enough good things about it. And it cost less than the Gibson.
David Sullivan: If you ever read this
1tip: switch the polytune and the Digitech Drop tune from place! ALWAYS Droptune FIRST!
Belzebong also plays through SS Sunn amps
That is SO FUNNY that Bryan talks about that Bassman 50! I got that amp for him for $75 in about 1988! We were playing in a band called Haus in Tucson, Arizona! I got that amp from Bill Cuevas, who played guitar in the U.S. (Tucson) band, Conflict. I really wanted the amp for myself, but I didn't have 75 fuckin' dollars, so I got Bryan to buy it! At least it was in my band, and I ended up with a Marshall 2204, instead! We sounded pretty good, for a couple of kids!
Just been to their show. I must admit it was one of the strongest shows ever seen, you can clearly hear that they are professionals. Also, one of the most down to earth guys. We spoke after the show about the gear, etc. All hail RED FANG. If they are ever touring in your city DO NOT MISS IT.
I love my solid state orange cr120 , basically just plug a 1993 Gibson les Paul in C# and let it rip man.
…. looking at a couple pedals, but haven't decided if I actually want or need one
Honestly, the Dispatch Manager doesn't really get away from you in terms of feedback looping or anything like that. It stays really subdued, even with the decay and repeats maxed.
whats with the manowar tshirt? was that ironic?
The host talks over the guests too much lol
Grolsch flip top washers, the guitarists secret tool! #FUNKYEAHREDFANG
a sunn o))) on an orange what a combo
Fire the tweaker
I was at this show absolutely my favorite show I have ever seen
no fucking wonder I can't find any Sunn Beta lead/bass amps online, Red Fang has them all
A real band….
ahhhh real life working musicians nice.
“Ohms don’t matter because it’s solid state”?!
Idiots. The higher the impedance the lower the watts are that you’re head puts out. So it matters a lot
Dudes sound like they think they’re spinal tap
I love the onstage men's room.
the whole concept of having no pedals is foreign to me. i guess at such a loud volume through a decent amp it doesn't matter…
r e d f a n g
o r e l s e
So now at least I know why I can’t find a beta lead to buy
These guys ????????
hell yeah drop pedal
Just found another beta lead for 125.00
Score!!!!!
Perry Bean is a journalist?? He's more like the guy that hangs out a just little too long in the men's room..
Check out my man wearing a Torche T-Shirt!
How does Aaron play through a guitar cabinet and not blow the hell out of it!?
I went all solid state several years ago. Love seeing a great band rocking SS gear proudly. Seeing Red Fang go that route definitely felt validating.
The guy doing this interview is obnoxious.
great band. One of my fav's. REDFANG!
This man straight busted out a Hisingen blues riff… mad respect
Grolsch beer red rubber cap washers make good strap locks as well!
How does that bass player get his fuzz tone? By the amp head? How?
I have the same shitty PBR hat.
I wonder how many guys they interview have bad BO?
cool guys. Grolsch washer.
Torche rules
In the last few years, I can't hear the difference in a recording between a Helix and anything else. Processing power can now duplicate tube responses.
