  • Chet Atkins tapped as well. see "Chet Atkins Guitar Tapping! [Rare]"; also see "Chet Atkins Orange Blossom Special – No.1 Guitar Channel" at ~1:50.

  • I remember when I first started playing the guitar I was fooling around and reached up and taped a note or two and thought "Huh that's weird" and never thought much more of it. Never in my wildest dreams thought you can make music with it until Eddie. And I never believed that story about Jimmy Page either. RIP Eddie.

  • I'm absolutely shocked that I haven't noticed anybody mentioning Michael Schenker. Maybe I missed it, but seems like no one knows Michael is

  • Lol, Yeah me in 1968, and my Jazz guitar instructor picked up his ruler smacked me across the fingers and said quit waisting your time and start practicing end of story…. Fkr

  • Rik Emmet should've been on this list. His influences were "Roy Clark, and Chet Atkins. "Rock and Roll Machine", was a killer showcase of his tapping prowess! This video was cool..

  • "Marty McFly" definitely did some tapping during his guitar solo, November 1955, "Enchantment under the Sea" dance ????????????

  • Tapping has been known and used for centuries. The way it was used wasn't accepted by popular rock/pop guitarists because they hadn't refined it to fit, on a grand scale. Eddie did that. He never claimed to be the first. He was the first to have his tapping popularly accepted on a grand scale. That was his genius.

  • Also, Ritchie Blackmore did an extended solo using tapping live performances of "Lazy" as early as 1973–listen to the performance of the song on Made in Japan.

  • Sure everyone knows people that tapped before Eddie Van Halen, hell even i tried tapping before Eddie came out, but you need to understand that even Eddie admits he didn't invent it but what he did was to use it more than anyone else in his style, that's really all anyone needs to know, hope this helps your viewers understand, you don't need to spend more than it takes to type this comment to completely understand about Eddie Van Halen and him using tapping in his style, and BTW your welcome.

  • Member of the Van Halen Cult: Wait! I'm (Gay) Happy for Eddie, so he's the Best!. Rational Guitarist: Yeah! But, we now know the Chicken or the Egg. Member of the Van Halen Cult: "Don't you Remember, I'm Gay for Eddie" Rational Guitarist: We Know! Note: For Illustrative Purposes.

  • Eddie was as good as they come, but he was arrogant as hell and a liar. He claimed others copied him and got all the tricks and techniques from him.I believe he used the jimmy page thing to keep people away from the thought that he copied others.

  • Did I miss it or did nobody mention Steve Hunter on Aerosmith’s version of Train Kept A Rollin ? That was the first time I heard it. Probably 1974?

  • I remember the 70's well – there were a lot of guitar players that were jealous of Eddie because he raised the bar so high. This wasn't just about one new technique – it was an entire new playing style. Who did what first doesn't really matter – his entire playing style was an impact on the guitar world. Especially at a time when there were no videos or easy instructions for anybody to access or learn. Then he added more and more new techniques as each album came out, so his style stayed fresh. Eddie also said that he kept some of his techniques under wraps for a long time because he didn't want others to copy them, so the early timelines of when he started using them don't really mean much. The jealous rivalry against him continued on throughout the 80's with other players trying to one-up his techniques, and still continues today with people trying to knock him down a notch. Of course it still comes from other guitar players. You don't create that kind of impact on the guitar world by copying others. He was a true innovator and all around musician.

  • Guitar pull-offs, hammer-ons, and harmonics all existed before Eddie. Occasionally someone would use their right-hand finger or pick as a gimmick. That was never a question. Eddie became famous for incorporating multiple techniques together and turning it all into a completely new rock style. He didn't invent the vibrato dive bomb either, or string scraping, but he made them rock standards. He literally turned the guitar playing world upside down overnight, and was the catalyst for a new genre of rock.

  • So EVH took something other people did on guitar before him, did it better then anyone before him, not to mention all the amazing riffs he did, that didn't involve tapping? Wow, what a concept, the evolution of the guitar….they should have stop people from playing after that "Whizard of the Strings" did it.

  • Ace freeley stuff is compelling, but I still buy the Jimmy Page story. The heartbreaker solo has so much in it that sounds almost like proto evh

  • I've seen videos of Chet Atkins reaching over and getting notes with his right hand in the 50's and 60's

  • Christ – Emmet Chapman created the Stick (a stringed instrument PLAYED ENTIRELY by tapping) when EVH was in High School. Tweren't Ed's idea…

  • I already knew some of the cases mentioned in the video… But I was surprised by some, such as the case of Frank Zappa and especially Harvey Mandel! I really believe that Eddie lied about the origin of two-hands tapping. He was probably influenced by at least Harvey Mandel, Zappa and Steve Hackett. It is also worth mentioning that in jazz fusion, Emmet Chapman's technique was already widespread, jazz fusion musicians were already far ahead of rockers. And finally, tapping was already used in the way that George Van Eps used it on classical guitar before 1900… Eddie perfected the technique by applying it to hard rock, bringing greater speed.
