Alvin Lee used tapping as well.
Chet Atkins tapped as well. see "Chet Atkins Guitar Tapping! [Rare]"; also see "Chet Atkins Orange Blossom Special – No.1 Guitar Channel" at ~1:50.
I remember when I first started playing the guitar I was fooling around and reached up and taped a note or two and thought "Huh that's weird" and never thought much more of it. Never in my wildest dreams thought you can make music with it until Eddie. And I never believed that story about Jimmy Page either. RIP Eddie.
Steve Hackett in Genesis was definitely tapping a few years before Eddie Van Halen.
I'm absolutely shocked that I haven't noticed anybody mentioning Michael Schenker. Maybe I missed it, but seems like no one knows Michael is
Lol, Yeah me in 1968, and my Jazz guitar instructor picked up his ruler smacked me across the fingers and said quit waisting your time and start practicing end of story…. Fkr
Rik Emmet should've been on this list. His influences were "Roy Clark, and Chet Atkins. "Rock and Roll Machine", was a killer showcase of his tapping prowess! This video was cool..
Thanks ! Great informative video ! Not the usual trash on someone just to get views.
"Marty McFly" definitely did some tapping during his guitar solo, November 1955, "Enchantment under the Sea" dance ????????????
Roy Smeck wrote Hot For Teacher and Eddie stole it!
Eddie never claimed he invented it????????
he never said he was the first he mastered finger tapping where no one else did
i was Tapping in 1968 on my micky mouse gutiar
Eddie said he got it from Steve Hackett.
Tapping has been known and used for centuries. The way it was used wasn't accepted by popular rock/pop guitarists because they hadn't refined it to fit, on a grand scale. Eddie did that. He never claimed to be the first. He was the first to have his tapping popularly accepted on a grand scale. That was his genius.
Also, Ritchie Blackmore did an extended solo using tapping live performances of "Lazy" as early as 1973–listen to the performance of the song on Made in Japan.
Eddie took it to 10 levels above
Sure everyone knows people that tapped before Eddie Van Halen, hell even i tried tapping before Eddie came out, but you need to understand that even Eddie admits he didn't invent it but what he did was to use it more than anyone else in his style, that's really all anyone needs to know, hope this helps your viewers understand, you don't need to spend more than it takes to type this comment to completely understand about Eddie Van Halen and him using tapping in his style, and BTW your welcome.
Congrats on the exceptional Video, 1st time here…Subscribing. Fan of VanHalen Circa 1981ish
Member of the Van Halen Cult: Wait! I'm (Gay) Happy for Eddie, so he's the Best!. Rational Guitarist: Yeah! But, we now know the Chicken or the Egg. Member of the Van Halen Cult: "Don't you Remember, I'm Gay for Eddie" Rational Guitarist: We Know! Note: For Illustrative Purposes.
Has anyone told you that you look like Joe List ?
Eddie was as good as they come, but he was arrogant as hell and a liar. He claimed others copied him and got all the tricks and techniques from him.I believe he used the jimmy page thing to keep people away from the thought that he copied others.
Did I miss it or did nobody mention Steve Hunter on Aerosmith’s version of Train Kept A Rollin ? That was the first time I heard it. Probably 1974?
I remember the 70's well – there were a lot of guitar players that were jealous of Eddie because he raised the bar so high. This wasn't just about one new technique – it was an entire new playing style. Who did what first doesn't really matter – his entire playing style was an impact on the guitar world. Especially at a time when there were no videos or easy instructions for anybody to access or learn. Then he added more and more new techniques as each album came out, so his style stayed fresh. Eddie also said that he kept some of his techniques under wraps for a long time because he didn't want others to copy them, so the early timelines of when he started using them don't really mean much. The jealous rivalry against him continued on throughout the 80's with other players trying to one-up his techniques, and still continues today with people trying to knock him down a notch. Of course it still comes from other guitar players. You don't create that kind of impact on the guitar world by copying others. He was a true innovator and all around musician.
Guitar pull-offs, hammer-ons, and harmonics all existed before Eddie. Occasionally someone would use their right-hand finger or pick as a gimmick. That was never a question. Eddie became famous for incorporating multiple techniques together and turning it all into a completely new rock style. He didn't invent the vibrato dive bomb either, or string scraping, but he made them rock standards. He literally turned the guitar playing world upside down overnight, and was the catalyst for a new genre of rock.
Who effing cares ? Those 20 guys were r smart enough to put together that tone ! Might be the first just guitar solo that everyone knows exactly where they were the first time they heard those reversed car horns coming w down , thumping bass 8 those harmonics ! 6min later we get eruption! The guitar world changed that day ! Leave Ed alone !fuc your list !
Great video!
All these guitarist doing the Tapping thing is just EXTENDED NOTES,,,,EDWARD VANHALEN WENT MUCH FUTHER WITH IT,,,,EDWARD GAVE TAPPING ITS OWN LANGUAGE ON GUITAR.
Stanley Jordan was TAPPING FULL CHORDS,,,,JAZZ PLAYING.
So EVH took something other people did on guitar before him, did it better then anyone before him, not to mention all the amazing riffs he did, that didn't involve tapping? Wow, what a concept, the evolution of the guitar….they should have stop people from playing after that "Whizard of the Strings" did it.
Well done.
Ace freeley stuff is compelling, but I still buy the Jimmy Page story. The heartbreaker solo has so much in it that sounds almost like proto evh
I've seen videos of Chet Atkins reaching over and getting notes with his right hand in the 50's and 60's
Christ – Emmet Chapman created the Stick (a stringed instrument PLAYED ENTIRELY by tapping) when EVH was in High School. Tweren't Ed's idea…
19:58 if this guy is an amateur we all have to quit
Rory Gallagher and Frank Marino
Hackett was first in rock. Just saw Haifitz doing it on the violin the other day on YouTube.
I already knew some of the cases mentioned in the video… But I was surprised by some, such as the case of Frank Zappa and especially Harvey Mandel! I really believe that Eddie lied about the origin of two-hands tapping. He was probably influenced by at least Harvey Mandel, Zappa and Steve Hackett. It is also worth mentioning that in jazz fusion, Emmet Chapman's technique was already widespread, jazz fusion musicians were already far ahead of rockers. And finally, tapping was already used in the way that George Van Eps used it on classical guitar before 1900… Eddie perfected the technique by applying it to hard rock, bringing greater speed.
Hasnt anybody heard Carillion by Benvenuto Terzi? Italian composer from the early XXth century. https://youtu.be/yLNM1czvV7A?si=hfn8o98532p1DYl_
Eddie took the ball and ran with it. He mastered the mainstream and did it with confidence and power.
Duuuuuude who cares ????????????no one will ever play or tap like Eddie…stanly jordon tapped chords …u sound like a little bi.ch ????????????????the first person to tap was the one who invented the guitar ????????????????????????????????????????
Danny Johnson of the Derringer band was also tapping before Eddie
Stanley Jordan
eddie was a pianist also, originally, so there is some relation there too.
Eddie himself said he didnt invent it and he said himself that a lot of guitarists did bf him.
classical guitarists fold the bass strings over and play snare, which is mental too.
2 of the greatest rock solos of all time belong to eddie – beat it and jump. eruption and aint talkin bout love – fantastic.
Great history lesson thank you. There were a few on the list which were new to me.
Stanley Jordan took tapping to another level
As EVH said he didn’t invent it , he got the idea from Page in heartbreaker , that’s how he heard it .
