Rig Rundown: JD Simo [2022]

Our last Rundown with J.D. Simo was eight years ago. Since then, the songwriter, guitarist, and producer has worked with Jack White, Tommy Emmanuel, Luther Dickinson, Dave Cobb, Blackberry Smoke, and even been a friend in Grateful Dead founder Phil Lesh’s band Phil and Friends. Currently, Simo is promoting his most unique, original, and raw album yet, called Mind Control, where he explores Afrobeat grooves and Mississippi trance blues. Simo invited John Bohlinger and the PG team to his studio to look at some new and old friends with strings, cones, and attitude.

  • JD's the man. He can literally outboogie anyone; my secret dream would be seeing him sharing the stage with the JSBX, that would be some serious barrelhousing!

  • Fun Video! Happy Eye's… I think they all may have had a few tokes before it started. ????

  • I see why they called it the asscaster. Nearly rattled the lunch out of me when he turned the fuzz on!

  • I discovered him because of a Carter Vintage Guitars demo. He played a 1958 Gibson ES 175 and I was blown away (3 minutes of pure heaven). I love his playing and he seems a very nice guy. I also learned a lot from some other guitar videos he made. He rocks!

  • I have been watching Rig Rundowns since the beginning. I actually was a part of the guitar community in the beginning of facebook. I left it a long time ago because it was just toxic and i quit playing. Out of nowhere, i got the bug again. I'm older now and work a lot, but ive been playing again and came back to these videos and this one is incredible to me. One of the last ones i watched was of JD when he was the small Hippie. Killer guitar player, but this one meant way more. We are all gettin fuckin old. I loved every bit of this and i love how honest he is about this vintage gear that everyone masturbates to.

  • I met JD and his Band at a festival in the UK a few years back – his band approached mine backstage because our dressing room warmup song at the time was bizarrely 'Keep on Movin' by Five, which they thought was funny. When I recognised him, I thrust my hand out to shake his which almost made him drop his 335… never would've forgiven myself… but He and his band were extraordinarily kind and gracious and we had a good time hanging out in the sun for a bit eating crappy festival food.

  • I saw JD at Songbirds in Chattanooga right before the pandemic hit. Awesome show. Very early Zeppelin & Mountain vibes with his trio. He was just playing into his old deluxe reverb and it is easily the LOUDEST show I've ever been to.
