The Shocking Truth About Guitar Tone and Compression
In this video, we’re exploring why compression pedals aren’t always ideal for recording. While great for live tone and sustain, they lack the flexibility of studio compressors, which offer precise control and non-destructive editing. We’ll explain when a pedal can be helpful but why compressing in post usually gives cleaner, polished results. Thank you
I use a compressor on my pedalboard for actual compression rather than tone-shaping, and find it extremely useful. It's great for controlling the dynamics of my clean tone. Without the compression, when I play clean, strummed chords are very loud and single-note lines and fingerpicked lines are very quiet. A compressor helps even that out. It's especially noticeable when playing with my band, at band volume. Without the compressor, the strummed parts are ear-piercing and the single-note and fingerpicked lines disappear. Thanks to the compressor, the clean tone behaves more like overdriven tone. So it's an essential tool for me, especially live.
I only have a Behringer Virtualizer 3D FX2000 for compression purposes, but now that I know that other FXs can be used for boosting and giving presence to the signal, It makes me wanna try it.
Great video ????
Go listen to Gilmour at Pompei playing the intro to Shine on you Crazy Diamond…the Compressor is essential, and that's how you use a Compressor pedal with single coils.
I have an MXR Dyna and I use it when I need to add some body to my fingerpicking, especially in clean sounds, but also when I want a solo with sustain and long notes, like "Is This Love" by Whitesnake, for example, it definitely works very well.
I agree with you. compression pedals are not used for actual compression, they are used as buffers, clean boost, saturators, coloring…but not for the actual function of compression. Great take.
