There is and has been so much confusion about what Tonex Pedal/Tonex One global input trim is actually doing and because of this a lot of very bad advice spread around. This video is not about where to set your input trim but rather what the input trim is in fact doing which may very well change the way that you use it. I hope you find this video useful and that it helps improve your Tonex experience.

jason, appreciate your fine work and have a tonex one question. is there any way to access delay mix on the unit itself as we can do with rev mix? i use only delay and would love to be able to set the mix on the pedal itseld. thanks!
Does the global trim setting make it easier to switch between different guitars of different outputs? humbuckers and single coils for example. All of the individual presets would have their individual gain controls but if you switch over to a higher output guitar you could bring back the trim so that you're not over saturating everything after playing single coil. Just my thought I just got my pedal and I'm still learning.
Jason, great video as usual. I still find one thing confusing about Tonex: there seems to be global "digital" volume assigned to the rightmost encoder. There's also "analog master volume" in global setup (-40 to +3dB) – I noticed it works in bypass mode as well. But what is the purpose of this setting? I can't think of even one example when I'd find it useful. Pardon my ignorance ????
Hi Jason! Can you please answer one question about gain knob? I'm curious if I put tonex compressor pre-amp (before amp) would gain effect be after or before compressor? Sorry for my bad english.
Go into global setup (alt button over 6 seconds) set the GLOBAL VOLUME TO -14dBfs using your test signal.
This is the SOP for all professional recording that no one ever told you about. NEVER APPROACH THE RED nomatter what anyone on YouTube says.
Now, about input trim. It is a mess because people jack it when capturing and then there is no standard.
It should be internally set and glued at +0 or the captures are not consistent on useage. It doesn't sound better when it is jacked, it reacts with compressed dynamics. That isn't how an amp works.
If we all did this thing, then the only fault in the system is monitoring differences. These tools are useful, but the non-standard captures are more novel than useful glimpses of reality. People jack the unit harshly to make it louder. That is what amplifiers and headroom are for. It's brutal and honestly disappointing.
He uses most if not only very clean sounds, but download Stelligan's Blonde Bassman Moddified and 102 Dumble captures. Check out his whole collection. They are the most perfectly captured amps on tonenet. The hot Dumble captures were made specifically for me. Also, you must get his Kingsley ef86 line amp capture.
Please people, stop adding eq in captures. Get the best sound from the amp channels and cap those direct. This system isn't like Neural. It's far superior in performance but you can't clean the bottom out of mud. User misuse is rampant.
Great explanation and demonstration of this!
Greetings all! Question for all the smart people. Will the new TONEX update cover iOS? I’m getting a weird feeling from their website that iOS will not be updated and I use TONEX on my iPad so this is very concerning. Does anyone have any information regarding whether iOS will get the update? Thank you very much and best regards and best wishes to all!
Hi jason i have a tone x full version i am running through a power amp and a guitar cab with vintage 30s speakes even with the cab bypassed still dont sound right i get a better sound when i load a ir trough my studio monitors but for some reason cant get to sound good through my cab do you have any recommendations
Ciao Jason, seguo i tuoi tutorial e sono sempre interessanti. Volevo chiederti come fai arrivare il segnale di test nel Tone x, e che livello mandi il segnale sempre nel Tone x. Grazie
Hello, I need help please. I bought mesa boogie reference from ik multimedia. But all the presets sound terrible, little gain and muddy. I tried the input trim up and down and nothing. even when i put them directly into the pedal and tried it without the tonex app, they all sound absolutely horrible. I don't know what to do anymore. Has anyone here had the same problem?I also tried three different guitars, one with active pickups and two with passive pickups. Same every time.
Hey ! Amazing video ! Is that also true using the ToneX in the FX Loop of an amp ? Or it’s only available in front of an amp ? When I use my tonex in the FX Loop, the sound is lower 🙁
I am sorry, but if something needs THAT much explanation there is something wrong from the get go! I have gotten ToneX 2x here to give it even a second try and both times i sent it back because all Tone Capture were all over the map with Gain Structure and Level. Nearly none sounded as intended and i know the original Amps. What's the use in setting Gain to every Model and not knowing if it really represents the original Gain Structure now? As much as didn't like Kemper for its slightly honky sound which ads something to the Mids i need to say that they've got this issue right, I could just relate every Tone Capture or Profile to its original Amp instantly!
just today on a portuguese speakers tonex's whatsapp group im part of. this guy "teaching" how you have to adjust input trim when you change for a different guitar.. ????????
Outstanding job explaining this. Years ago I would have tried to do this and then explain it in text on a forum and no one would read it or be able to understand it. With that said there are no laws being broken doing it however you want to…if you want to run your levels hot or low or use a shoelace for a guitar string who cares as long as it works for you….BUT, understanding how it works and what the facts are gives you the knowledge to use the tools how you see fit and if something isn't how you want it the understanding to change it.
I have been following all your videos lately on Tonex and input trim, and gain staging very closely. I understand the concept and appreciate all the knowledge you are sharing. Knowing your captures are optimized at -3 input trim level on the Tonex, I would know how to set up my device running your captures. But I also run other captures, specifically the Mesa Signature pack from IK/Mesa. Not knowing how other captures were created and what is the optimal input trim for those captures, how would I be able to figure out what to adjust my gain on each preset to have the capture sound as the creator intended it? I currently have my input trim at +6 running tonex in the loop of my HX stomp. I feel like my preset volumes are weak at any less but I also don't think my tone models sound correct.
So if I'm using tonex in the FX loop of hx stomp my in put trim should be -3 to avoid digital clipping?
Jason, I really appreciate you doing these videos. I know it takes patience and I can see you have it. I am thankful your here to explain it.
great video as always ! yeah, you are right, there's no digital clipping sound in your tone at high input trim level.
Thanks Jason. I’ve been setting my Global Trim Input to zero. I use it with Helix so I am going to try the -3 setting and see how it goes.
The bottom line is that if my clean preset sounds too driven, I should adjust the gain knob on my Tonex pedal to get it back to a cleaner sound. Right?
Please don’t give up spreading the word! Guitar players can be knuckleheads, but we will get this eventually. :0)
Hi Jason I was wondering if you could help me go about getting the most accurate results when using amplitube 5 software because I recently bought it to use with my Motu M2 and epihone Les Paul modern and nothing seems to sound right especially not the high gain models so am I doing something wrong with the gain on my interface?
They have already stared sending, new Tonex will arrive Monday ????????????
???????????? non-stop series ????
you have so many videos about the input trim that I think at this point it was a mistake for IK to include it if this many people are confused to need 40 videos about it
