Yes, sometimes bass finger exercises can be boring. But if you do them right, you’ll notice big gains in your fretting within a month or two of putting in just a few minutes a day.
I’ll start you out in this video with an exercise you’ve probably seen before. It seems predictable and dull but I’ll show you a way to make it fun.
Once you nail that, in Level 2 I’ll add another variable to the exercise that’ll make it way more productive. You’ll learn to stop ‘see-sawing’ your hand around and reduce wasted movement when fretting.
Are you suffering from flying finger syndrome? Level 3 will zoom in on your fretting range of motion, so you stay ready for whatever you need to play next. Most bassists suck at this.
In Level 4 we’ll tweak the exercise to include some string crossing, so you train up your efficiency for even more real-world bass playing scenarios. Again, most bass players don’t even THINK about this, let alone do it well.
Level 5 puts it all together with a full chromatic scale exercise – and a new level goal that will keep you from getting worn out or even injured.
Do you like things that don’t suck? Me too. Subscribe to BassBuzz to see some more of them – https://yeah.bassbuzz.com/subscribe

???? What level did you make it to? (without trashing your Level Goals)
practicing bass for over 2 weeks now and I discover that I can already comfortably jump to level 4 exercise
NWA reference????????????
And an amazing video
Thanks!
I have 87 other tabs open…
Can I look? Or should I try to play the exercises without looking?
This looks like it can really help my post-stroke numb fingers. I was getting tired of just major scales and such. Targeting is going to help a lot, I hope. ????
Trying Level Four (a foolish mistake of me, I know), and stumbled upon the following problem.
When bite-sizing pinkie to ring on G string, I am able to play them without ruining Level 1 only for some time. Soon I'm either releasing the string a bit and start sounding dirty or having a palm ache. Does this have something to do with my palm posture? I don't feel comfortable placing it firmly straight as it was instructed in previous lessons, it feels rather… Twisted
Level 3 is so hard for me, great exercise!
2024 and about to buy the course. Thanks Josh ???????? from Ireland ????????
*nails level 4 on the first try "oh yea, I'm a natural"
level 5: I didn't even know there was a muscle there to cramp.
what do i do it my pinky cant reach the fourth fret from my pointer finger? i feel a strain and i cant get a good sound, because i cant reach that far?
13:14 Life advice: "This doesn't do me any good, because there is no bass over here"
I got my bass 2 weeks ago and started to notice I was just using one finger and I was wondering why I was so slow and then I realized I need to use all my fingers and I didn’t want to start a bad habit thanks.
As “newb” I find it funny how difficult the little details can be. I’m a total “newb Josh” in almost all the ways… stumbling and fumbling all over the place most of the time. Pulling off a note early to get the time to move to the next note, exaggerated movements lifting fingers, pinky notes buzzing , inconsistent timing when chugging an so on. But have also improved at the same time. Prob most important thing is to slow down and play it correctly, the speed will build with reps.

Josh, I'm connecting with your approach to teaching how to play the bass. Question: I think I saw you write with your left hand (if that was you) but you play bass right-handed. I too am left-handed. I tried playing bass right-handed but I wasn't comfortable so I bought a left-handed bass. Any thoughts? Thanks!
my pinkie.
Almost 40 year old watching these to learn bass for my oncoming midlife crisis =[
i love you josh
00:50 Sorry but do all of that but close out of my 80+ tabs
Picking up bass, this is not the first time with string instruments for me (bass viol, cello) so flying fingers are not too much of an issue, managed to get to level 4 fairly easily with no fret buzz or mistakes- but then Level 4 hit me in the face. You are right! It sounds so easy but it really is not
Me trying to do this on a BTB806MS after Josh gave this video to me as homework..
Send help!
lmfao 10:39 just killed me for some reason
So im really giving it my all, I've been drumming for over 30 years now but I've recently decided to pursue the bass like I've always wanted to but been scared to… I'm in love with it!!! But I'm really trying to follow these techniques as much as possible, I'm missing 1/3 of my middle finger and my ring and pinky finger are always hooked (they have wires for tendons and don't go straight) this is my good hand, my fret hand.. I can tell you Josh I'm so grateful for your videos and teachings, they help alot even though it doesn't always work right with my hand and i have to adjust my hand differently than a normal hand with normal working fingers.. I make it work well though with your lessons and I'm truely grateful I found your channel!!! Thank you sooo much!!!! I hope you see this!!
