Rick Graham reviews the Carlsbro 50 Watt Amp!
Carlsbro is one of the UK’s longest serving amp makers, with a history stretching way back into the 1950s. During the sixties it became a mainstay of the ‘British guitar sound’ with a series of tough, no-nonsense heads and combos. Over the decades the company also branched out into PA gear and produced a succession of combos and heads that a generation of players cut their teeth on.
Now Carlsbro is back with a bang. In issue 19, our very own Rick Graham reviewed the attractively priced Evo 50 DC valve head and 4×12 cab saying: “I have to be frank and admit that I was fooled by the price of this amp. I simply wasn’t expecting the EVO50 DC to be as good as it is. It produced some really great clean tones on both channels, particularly the second channel, and cooked up a storm when it came time to push the gain. Coupled with the EVO 412, this deadly duo makes for a fantastic combination.”

It’s interesting that on the high gain channel note to note definition got better. Usually the rhythm channel has more clarity. Scratch that. Lead 2 sounds muddy.
I have just bought the mini head, of this, it's a great little amp for the money, I have a Tiny Terror as well, and this, at nearly half the cost stacks up well, albeit, offers a very different sound. This does a great impression of a Messa rectifier!
i have the lighter version of this guitar its so beautiful!
The cleans were really nice, the high gains beg for some good chunky metal riffs .. I just wish he'd turned the 2nd gain stage back a little bit to give us an idea if it cleaned up enough to bring out a little better note definition in more complex chords … otherwise, great sounding rig and , as always, thanks Rick, you never cease to give us great chops!!!!
Sounds awful and if it's got valves in it, something went wrong somewhere
That got really growly really quick.
This amp sounds amazing ! I really hope to win this!!
Is that the only thing you can play with gain? Really. Play some damn metal dude. I am sure that that amp can sound a lot better if you know how to use the guitar!
i'd love to win this, is it too loud for home and pub gigs? that initial tone is awesome…
awesome amp….!!! hoping to win this amp in the competition…!!
