1966 Jose Ramirez 1A Classical Guitar “The Segovia Model” Brazilian RW/Spanish Cedar, RARE – DEMO
We are excited to showcase this 1966 Jose Ramirez (III) Classical Guitar. This is a very Rare Segovia Model Class 1a that is larger in scaled in every aspect. It was designed by Jose Ramirez III according to Segovia’s wishlist. All the original sales paperwork and correspondence regarding this guitar from the Ramirez workshop is included with the purchase of this guitar.
This is a one owner guitar who under the recommendation of Michael Lorimer, a direct understudy of Segovia, the family went to Spain to the factory and ordered the guitar. The student/owner of the guitar played guitar from about 1966-1970 and gave it up. It has been in its case until his retirement this year.
The Music Mill purchased the instrument to bring it back to life and hopefully you can tell, mission has been accomplished!! The guitar was sent to Allen Watsky in NJ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/allen-watsky-21213818) who is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable luthiers specializing in Classical Guitars. He heat treated to get the neck angle perfect, planed the fingerboard and refretted. The nut and saddle are original but were adjusted. The instrument was carefully cleaned, cleaned and oiled the tuners.
The guitar is all original (except the frets) with original case. No cracked dents or splits. Surface scratches as shown.
As mentionted above this is a larger than normal sized Classical guitar. Scale is about 660.6cm versus a traditional classical at 650cm. The fingerboard is Canted by design. Action is 10/64 on bass side versus 8/64 on standard scale classical (by design) and 8/64 on treble side versus 6/64 (by design). It is an adjustment to go to this instrument from a standard scale classical but if you have larger than normal hands, or want the best sonically pure and loud concert instrument, this is right guitar for you.
Dave Newsam is the musician demonstrating the guitar. (http://davidnewsam.com/) He did a magnificent job and we are very excited to find this guitar a new home. Trades are encouraged, financing and payment options available.
The famous Jose Ramirez III workshop for over half a century has produced instruments performed on by countless professionals from Sting to Segovia, Chet Atkins to Sabicas and Lee Ritenour to Christopher Parkening. For current on Ramirez guitars, please see their website. (https://ramirezguitarshop.com/)
Thank you so much for looking and good luck!

what's the price on one like this?
Sounds just like my 1966 Hiroshi Tamura
I've got a 1971 1A ceder top and it's just fantastic. It's timbre is second to none and it's LOUD !! Fantastic guitar that I'll probably have t'il I pass.
Don't you mean Western Red Cedar (soundboard) ?
I have uma Jose Ramirez R2 from 2007
Great playing
is it possible sometimes a guitar sounds too good.. like it has so high trebles and basses etc that it actually detracts from the music??
The sound is similar with PB Royal. I wonder if it was made by PB. ❤
do you have any Ramirez guitars, and how much is it
Sounds just like my Oribe.
Que maravilha de instrumento, e excelente performance do músico. Parabéns !
❤
There is no Ramirez Segovia Model. Segovia played a 1A with a blue label and some dishonest people put a label over those saying it was a Segovia model. All lies.
This is from the Guitar Salon International website:
Ramirez never built or approved a “Segovia Model” guitar. According to a letter dated May 24th, 1983 from José Ramirez III to Mr. George Dauphanais (Ramirez distributor during the 80s), the so-called Segovia Model was created by Jim Sherry during the 70s (his previous distributor). The letter goes on to say that the gold label was applied by Sherry over part of the Ramirez label. During the late 60s and throughout the 70s José Ramirez exported two principal models: 1a, or “first class” guitar with a blue label, and 2a or “second class” guitar with a red label. In the same letter, Ramirez claims that his 2a guitars utilized backs and sides made from inferior materials and thus were sold as 2a models. To both the 1a and 2a guitars a “Segovia Model” gold label was applied over the Ramirez label by Sherry without permission. Ramirez was clearly upset about this procedure as it concealed his intent to market the 2a guitar. My experience of these Segovia models is that they are indistinguishable from the actual Ramirez 1a and 2a models. The “Segovia” model, therefore, was purely a marketing device.
Heard about these for years; severely underwhelmed by the sound.
And ahhh…
Spanish cedar top?
what was the asking price?
Im not inpressesed by the sound to be honest, the bass are not that great, but Nice looking guitar
at least get someone who can play bwv999 correctly
Sold fast im sure..funny how several instruments can be detected coming from just 1 guitar.
Awesome.
The Segovia model sounds great!
The normal scale length is 65 cm = 650 mm and not 650 cm as written. So far i know the scale of this Ramirez is 66.6 cm = 666 mm and not 660.6 cm as written.
It's my understanding that Segovia (who at the time had the most beautifull classical guitar sound in the world and as such was excellent advertisement) rejected various guitars given to him for free by Ramirez before he embraced one for concert playing. Concidering the efford made by Ramirez to have the best player in the word playing his/this guitar I don't think he would mind it being referred to as "the segovia model" and he most likely did so himself. After Segovia started playing the guitar in public it boosted a run on this model of guitar and the Ramirez studio was loaded with orders. My father ordered one in 1962 (just before the mass production began) and received a superbe instrument that plays and sounds like a dream. He also recommended it to his concervatory students but stopped promoting them when Ramirez started to use tapernt necks. My father concidered that "improved" model as an adaption to lesser players (who complained about buzzing bass strings) but totally crap to those who can play. So the guitar was in a way destroyed my its own succes. My fathers guitar is similar to the one segovia played and actually had both the same qualities as the same flaw (he told me one specific combination of notes sound crap on both his and segovia's guitar). Everyone who played or heard my fathers guitar was hugely impressed and it's the only classical guitar which sound made me cry of happiness. Many concidered it to be magic and the same expression was used for the one flamenco guitarist Manolo Sanlucar owned. My fathers guitar sounds great to the player but not to a listener/student sitting just in front of it. But when you take a bit more distance (like in a concert hall) it sounds like heaven. When my father decided to sell it I was really shocked and actually lost my voice a couple of times. So my father decided to keep it for me.
Ethereal playing and tone. Delightful performance by a highly skilled and inspiring musician. Thank you for sharing this.

Seriously, do you need to use term "Segovia model", when simply 1A would be sufficient? Whenever I hear someone trying to sell a "Segovia model" I immidiately think of something fishy, scam-like. Segovia played on whatever 1A Ramirez shop supplied him with, and he used them simply because of sturdiness. "Segovia model" has such a bad connotation. It was a label put on by american reseller, Sherry Brenner, and never used as branding by Ramirez shop. He put that label on both 1A:s and cheaper 2A:s models and sold them all for same price due to high demand for 1A:s back in 70's, something for which Ramirez shop withdrew his resseling rights. Otherwise 1A, and this one in particular is for sure very good guitar (I own one myself :-)).
Fabulous instrument! Nice playing, David. MMM continues to surprise and delight its customers.
