Supro Amulet – An amp designed by accountants?
Today I go over the pros and all the cons of the Supro Aumulet 1×12 amplifier. I am not a qualified amp technician, but I have learned so much from watching @PsionicAudio and a speaking directly with other independent technicians over the last month that I feel it’s extremely important for people to know exactly what they are spending their money on. I’m sure there are many people who have yet to have any problems with these modern supros and are very happy for them.

DEMO NOTES/GEAR INFO – This was a really weird one. I delayed making the review of this because I wasn’t sure what was going on with the amp and spent time filming over several days. I used the Fender American Vintage 65 Jaguar and the Seventy Seven Albatross. The mic was the SM57 going straight into the Universal Audio Apollo Twin. No pedals were used, all sounds were from the amp.

Had a new Supro in my repair shop . I was unable to get a schematic from them . I gave it back to the owner unrepaired , no charge . It's a tube guitar amp made by a pedal company . Two different things . Don't sell your Music Man .
Great review. Actual review. Rare on YouTube, sadly. Nice job. Thanks.
Mate the GROUND connection for the input jack is the soldered coax wire you're literally ZOOMING in on at 12:30 not some lock washer…. Also, where's the hum you mention? Can you please show us where in the video we can hear that because I think I missed it…
A quick google search on Psionic Audio and all I find is tons of people on reddit and gear forums bashing that guy for fraud and being a scamster, maybe not the best person to be citing for your channel. His entire channel is clickbait at best which is a VERY similar feeling I got watching this.
That pic of the vent is from my video, I ended up installing one on the other side. It does stay very cool now. I've not noticed any voulme issues that you mentioned…almost certainly a bad tube. I'm in love with mine of course your milage may vary. https://youtu.be/SQEeXcRC4LQ
9:14 You mentioned the tubes? What are the power tubes? Maybe you tell that later.
lol it’s 1×10 and 1×12 because it’s 1 times a 10” or 1 times a 12” and is said like one ten, two 10s, 1 twelve, 2 twelves, etc.
literally never heard them called a 1 by 10 or a 1 by 12 in my life. Like it’s a piece of lumber or something ????
Tube guitar amps are an american rock n' roll technology and should not be outsourced to communist china
On paper this thing is awesome. There is a lot going on there. So the price is very good. If an American company build that that thing it would be $3,000. So if it does have problems then you will have to pass on it.
Volume fade can be preamp bias drift or blocking distortion. It's innocuous using old preamp designs, very supro. Anything over 1M for grid leak resistors will let charge build up if you're strumming away. Those gets dirtier and quieter until the tube can recover. Noisy amps to me say poor leads or unmanaged filaments. Class A runs hot plus Supro loves to throw hot high wattage resistors into their circuits. Sounds great.
Too bad, because it sure is a looker and sounded pretty good to me-especially with the Jaguar. Would definitely take the Music Man over any Supro. I’ll stick with my vibrolux and jazz chorus.
Supros have a super cool unique sound but honestly just buy a jhs super bolt.
Gave you a like! Well done! Thanks for the thorough critique.
bad tubes(s)
I appreciate the honesty in the review but it seems like you’re reviewing a defective build. The heat and power sagging are not normal. Supro seem to have QA issues as there are a few reviews floating around online of faulty builds.
Sweet demo. Wish they made amps that held up. Love that Jag. Just seems they make them as cheap as possible.
Nice job with the in room audio. As you brought in the attenuator I could pick up on the unplugged sound to get a feel of how it would sound in my room.
Old school for a reason…I don't jump when Simon says SUPRO! WOW!…errrrSimon says Magnatone! nope!
The originals if you have to – but don't get jerked by FOMO on all these fake retreads. You like being a slave?
Excellent video. I’ve had my Amulet for about a year now and I love it, I’ve even toured with it (and run it at 1W on stage! Mic’d of course) and it has not had any issues.
That said, the heat has always made me nervous. I actually asked Dave Koltai about it- he said the amp runs hot by nature, but the heat is most intense at 1W and when the amp is on for a while but not being played. Personally, the heat still makes me uncomfortable, so thanks to your video I routed a cooling vent myself and installed a tooth washer while I was at it. I really like this amp. It’s small, light, and personally I think quite versatile for my needs though others may disagree. I really appreciate the advice on how to get it to a place where it can last as long as it should.
Good review of what – to me – sounds like a bad design and a bad build. I'm pretty sure this brand was resurrected solely to sell into history that Page used SOME variety of Supro on LZI. NOTHING you played on 4+ guitars at any volume sounded remotely like LZI which is fine. But nothing sounded good in its own right either. Everything sounded muffled. The variations in sound over hours / days suggest the tubes are biased WAY too high and are damaging the caps and resistors with heat which will put the circuit further out of balance and eventually destroy the amp, probably even before the warranty expires.
I’ll stick to vintage Supro amps from the 50’s and 60’s…
Thank You so much. and if Supro or other manufacturers are angry about honest reviews. This video actually made me want to buy the amp more knowing that i can now fix those drawbacks. Obviously it helps if you can do your own labor. But I think you did more for their customers and consequently Supro itself, oppose to what a marketing department may think. This is how you get a job doing QC for a legacy company. Thank you again ????
Good fully honest review, thanks
Tremolo sounds great.
I'm a sucker for beautiful aesthetics, and Supro have always pushed all the right buttons for me. Their previous denim look from when all their amps were named after planets and stuff? The Royal Reverb was on my list, the Jupiter, the Big Star, I looked at a lot of them. There was always a catch in each model. Either it had just a tone knob, or it was too heavy, or it didn't have reverb. There was never one had everything. And by the time the Royale and the Black Magic came out, I'd already started hearing how they were bad inside. The one time I didn't fall for just a sexy looking box.
Just buy a Phaez Amp
Great demo and review!!! ????????
I've wanted a few Supros over the years but always have steered clear due to so many issues I've heard of and continue to hear of.
Wow, I wasn't under the impression Supro sells bad amps (I mean, the guitars are cool and all, but that's it)
By accountants, for dentists
Not "a threaded washer" – a toothed lock-washer. The place I work at threw out a literal quarter-ton because "it's obsolete technology" (we use nylon-insert nuts these days) so I've got an assortment. And they should be used on the underside of most hardware, NOT under the hex nut.
Aside from that quibble, I quite enjoyed seeing an HONEST amp review.
Bought a used Supro blues king 12 the amp sounds amazing at low volumes and even better at higher levels. Also my first tube amp, I love this thing to death and have had 0 issues with it thus far. Huge upgrade from solid state.
Good video!! ???? ???? ???? ???? ???? ????
So, honest question: what new amplifier is currently available for about $1300 that has the kind of build quality that you could recommend?
the cabinet is way too small. allows for concentration of heat in a small space.
the chassis is also too small, for the same reason.
everything should be spread out more, and with more ventilation.
someone wanted to save money on materials, by shrinking everything into the smallest enclosure.
tube amps need that extra space, especially if mounted upside down.
Look inside an $1800 Gibson Falcon 20 and maybe the Supro won’t seem so bad ????
I wouldn’t buy a Supro
I own one. No FX loop is my biggest gripe. It doesn’t take overdrive pedals well to me. The reverb is OK and Tremelo probably the best feature. It is not for everyone but checks a certain box. It just is not a versatile amp.
The Supro 1968rk Keeley Custom 12 or 1970rk Keely Custom 10 are excellent pedal platform amps, if that's your thing and you want a Supro. They're made in the USA but that's honestly not a prerequisite for a well made amp. Have had the 1970k for a few years now, and so far no issues. (Knock on wood!)
I was thinking of buying a Supro amp, but I already have enough regret purchases aka pos, so you and the comment section saved me from a bullet.i subbed
I own this amp, really wanted to like it, but wouldn’t recommend it. Your analysis is spot on. My solid state JC-22 sounds better and was way cheaper.
So? The Harley Benton amp and a Boss TR-2 for $400?
Thanks for the review, I hate amps that make noise when you are not playing.
