Playing Bass Guitar With Violin Bow – It’s Budget Cello!
Back story: I’d wanted to get a violin bow for years, and for some reason assumed they were all expensive. Some of them are STUPID expensive, but I found one for £7. I thought it was so cheap it didn’t work, but it turned out that rosin, which I’d previously thought was some kind of optional extra, is vital otherwise the bow won’t grip the string. I order and wait a few days.
Best immediate results were with bass, so bass this video was. It wasn’t affectation to hold the bass like a cello – angles of bowing meant I could only bow on the neck, top and bottom strings. Bowing on the neck causes harmonics to interfere with what you’re actually playing; it also coats your strings and neck with pine sap from the rosin. Don’t use your best instruments.
Certainly not perfect – bit of squeaking and fret noise – but then, bass isn’t designed for this heresy.

If you have some pedals for bass on a multi affect processor for bass I would give those a try improvise to your heart's content wonderful! Enjoy!

Hey Dave, I just stumbled upon this, and I'm a bass luthier and hack musician :)… I did a quick read below, and see that a Violin bow is a great entry way. You mentioned resin as a need. I'll google it, but know any good sources for bows (affordable)?
I'm thinking of making a special instrument with more of a rounded cello neck now (been done a bunch before with baby uprights, etc), but a prototype for my own recording purposes, then we'll see beyond that.. Subscribed 🙂
Just the thought of you trying the bow without rosin is giving me a heart attack. I'm the type of violin player that creates a misterious fog around when I'm playing from the amount of rosin I use lol
