The Old Smoothie is a throwback to a prototype of the late 1970’s and the Ball Family Reserve package adds extra class. Including a trans buttercream finish, bound fretboard and roasted maple neck, the BFR is a definite looker.

In this video, I also compare the Old Smoothie with the more traditional Stingray to help you decide if the Old Smoothie is the right bass for you.

  • Just FYI: Leo Fender designed the Stingray at his CLF research factory/workshop for the Music Man company with which he was partnered and designing products for. This includes the prototype that the Old Smoothie is based on. Sterling Ball was a beta tester and was not fond of how hot the pickups were on the other Stingray prototypes were. So Leo put together a specific prototype just for Sterling to try out….the model he coined Old Smoothie.

  • Actually, a traditional (pre-EB) Stingray had a metal cover with screws for the battery compartment . The plastic battery box was a change made by EB to the modern Stingray. Since this bass is a tribute to a beta version of the Stingray given to Sterling Ball by Leo Fender, a plastic battery box just wouldn’t be right.
