Viewer Suggested tips…
1. From Tim Campbell – Check out “Axis of Awesome” for a humorous yet instructional video of the simplicity of some music…
2. From David LaFerney – sing with yourself
3. From Jim Merritt, George Berrill and Kingstumble – if your fingers are too cramped try a wider necked instrument.
4. From Alaina Spencer – a classical guitar has a wider neck AND softer, easier-on-the-fingers nylon strings
5. From Tom M and Mark Castelletti – try capoing up a few frets where the frets are closer together. Move the capo down as you progress. Mark suggests that you tune down as you capo up.
6. From Gortagnan – keep your fretting nails short.
7. From John Montgomery – Study with a good guitar instructor.
8. From Sunny’s Gadget Reviews – try something new, a new chord or scale, every day or week. Keep adding to that knowledge and skill set.
9. From Gary Fuller Sr. – for late night, considerate practice get an electric guitar. Unplugged of course.

One of the things I like about Tom is that he isn't trying to show off like so many others. His intent is to actually help us learn how to play the guitar. Good on you, Tom, for keeping your ego out of your teaching videos!
I have had a guitar in my house for almost 50 years I have been jamming with the best guitarists on earth in my room since I was 12 ???? the past few years YouTube has brought me such enjoyment discovering tricks that I couldn’t figure out just by twisting backwards my old vinyls ,rewinding tapes or hoping to catch a glimpse of what my heroes were doing on Don Kirchner‘s rock concert on sat nights as a kid to make my four chords that I know the name of sound even better in the past couple years, while I was stranded on a desert island off the coast of Belize with my guitar a tablet & a wireless EU speaker stealing Internet from my neighbor people like you that have taken the time , consideration, and generosity to share secrets, that would otherwise be lost has brought my jam sessions to a whole different level at times you would almost think I was a pro as my fingers dance up and down the fretboard on notes and chords I have no clue what names they possess but arrive at just the perfect pitch and time at times I would swear I was channeling some dead musicians talent as the melodies lay down in perfect harmony Tonight I discovered your channel from a interview you did about the $99 Squier Strat I had to investigate a few seconds to find out who you were only to find that you were absolutely amazing bravo brother for sharing your talent looking forward to learning from your channel excellent advice many thanks – your new subscriber
one of the best thing I did in my life is…starting to learn guitar…ehmmm at 73! Never too late and each small step gives much satisfacton!
52 first time. Stupid fingers. Hopefully with practice I will improve.
I;m 68. pretty decent piano player, but I wish to learn the guitar. I don't even know where to start. Except I must buy my first guitar. THIS is what I need help with…. Help me pick out an acoustic guitar
Great tips!
Kathy Bates?!? I dont see that. I see Bob Seeger! Or more his twin sister.
Any advice on barring? Oh snap! Right after I asked that question you spoke of bar chords, oh snap!
Thanks for a great vid Tom! I'm 56 and coming out of lockdown my church has asked me to join them on the guitar – your tips have been really inspiring to get me strumming again – back to basics every now and then never hurts. My 5 minutes every day usually ends up being a lot longer. God bless and greetings from the African plains 🙂
For an older guy like me
Stretching my fingers before practice
Has helped my chord change transitioning ✌????????????????
Great tips
Thanks ????????
Are you working for JPL?
Hallo my name is Chris Steyl How do you tune a tone down on your guitar? Will you show it on video. ?
I’m 69 and started playing 8 months ago and have a terrible time singing and strumming.
Best p.o.v. on melody attainment.
Nobody talks about the strumming.
Nobody talks about the strumming to the song..
Can you tell me anything about this guitar value wise?
Wow was so impressed on your old guitar n sounds incredible. I have a 1960 rather cheap Kent guitar. Plays rather good also. Though I'm not a guitar player myself, just trying to get into it now some.
I’m a young 69 with bad arthritis
I bought a smaller Martin and I love it. I play two or three times a day so much easier on my shoulder compared to my yammy. I classical guitar I bought when I was 16. I play better when I sing along. Great videos. Just turned 65 on Saturday and having fun all over again!
A lot of professional guitarists can not sing and play at the same time. Some people simply can not multitask.
I got one. Donate a guitar to Luby's so there always one to practice on wherever you go.
Old beginner here. Thanks for this!
I attempted to learn to please a girlfriend many decades ago. Not a good WHY. I am learning now to complete a goal. Thank you for the great videos. My fingers and hands, although, are not pleased.
Could anyone please tell me the name of the solo was played in the beginning of the video ( there was just on solo ) I wanna learn to play it
Tom, give us lefties some love…
;
I am 79 and I am also trying to learn to play Guitar
Good teaching, Tom- like our style…
I cant stop picking the wrong string using a flat pick. I quit using a pick but dont really care for the muffel sound on everything. It's ok for finger picking. What exercise would you recommend?
I am a 1 day old learner.. And realised my hands are not flexible enough to press down the chords, is there any exercises to increase the flexibility of the fingers?
Yay! Just found you. i took lessons a year ago, lots and lots of theory. but when I went home, I couldn't replicate what we did in the 30 minute session. Also, my guitar is too big for me. I am looking forward to practicing 5 minutes a day and exploring smaller guitars.
I started at 17 and thought i was too old.
So glad I came across this channel, I had no idea bleeding fingers are not normal during the learning process.
Even while he is just sitting there talking, Tom's hands scream "expert guitarist." Every time he subconsciously grabs the neck, his fingers just automatically fall into a chord shape 🙂
Does tapping your foot as you play help you develop your timing?
I'm a 1963 Martin
Thank you sir I enjoy your time with me I'm older than you and a lot of injury's to my hands but I enjoy my guitar time so much I may never learn to play but I'm working hard to I'm having problems changing chords right now but I'm working hard at it again thank you for taking your valuable time with me and so many more
This is one of the best and most informative videos I’ve seen on YouTube in years! Touching on some topics and ideas that are usually overlooked! Greatly appreciate it!
Starts at 3:33.
I'm surprised no one suggested using a metronome. You can download a metronome and set it on the lowest beat that you can where you can play each note or chord cleanly. Increase the beats gradually until you're playing it at full speed.
here is another 72 year old geriatric, again learning to play an instrument for the very first time,
i think what i am playing sounds great, but then im deaf !
My tip would be to do your own set up, lots of videos showing how. Seasonal tweaking is necessary if you live in a region with cold winters and humid summers.
Intellectual property is a sticky subject for sure. After having to enforce my ip rights for advertising creative I have to agree with your approach yet I see the other side too. When the line gets crossed is probably locking tablature behind Patreon pay to play gates.
I am thrilled to have found this site! I am 61 yrs old and just picked up the guitar again after 30 years. Kids are off at college and I now have the time, inclination and focus to learn to play again. You are all so inspiring and Tom you are an amazing teacher!
Every guitar you use in your videos is mouth watering! Some stunning pieces
Córdoba GK Studio Negra is an incredible nylon guiltar to learn on.. a lot of guitar for the money, and its size makes it portable and it’s neck is similar size to standard steel.. its a lot of fun and comes with giggable electronics
