Used to listen to early stuff but after close to the edge I woke up
Jazzy? That was the reason Wakeman left the band for the ice! Too much wanna be Mahavishnu Orchestra for Rick's taste! What…he cant imitate Jon Hamer licks?
And afterall, it wasn't really that much jazz recorded except for Soundchaser. Did Rick leave during Soundchaser??? That would be hilarious.
You said, "how, dare me"!
I find that humourous.
You MUST listen to the live version from Yesshows! The versions of this track and Ritual are two of the greatest prog live tracks ever, lifting them both from merely sublime to ridiculous(ly transcendent)!! Music of the gods!!
Yes was the first big band I saw. They did the Relayer tour my first concert. Yes fan forever
Enjoy your channel very much!
Thanks for some Yes.
I remember first hearing this album when I was a teenager in the 70's…changed my life!
Many thanks for the excellent reaction, I have signed up as a subscriber. Needless to say, as it is so complex, is needs repeated listening to. I bought the album when it came out in 1974 and was blown away (with a Pioneer PL112D record deck, Yamaha amp and Kev speakers). That feeling never changes on repeated listening to this track and the entire album. One of their best, a true masterpiece.
Soon is probably the most beautiful piece of music ever composed
IMHO this is the best Yes work ever. Patrick Moraz gave a different sound with the keyboards that fits perfectly with this complex composition.
YES.
Genius. ????❤️????
I highly recommend that you get the Japanese SHM CD version!!!!!
It knocks every other version out of the water!!!!!
Epic
listen to awaken by yes, that is the epitomy of MUSIC
i was 6 feet away from steve howe in aberdeen scotland at the douglas hotel when he performed soon on his hawaiian guitar, heaven
Steve Howe is the best guitarist ever
Brilliant choice, especially on this foggy November day, for me it belongs in the category S/masterpieces like Close+Yes album, but you have to listen to this album consciously and be able to let yourself go in order to be able to enjoy the musical nuances. I can hear the other two in any mood, even when jogging, driving in a traffic jam, cleaning…
Keep having fun listening to good music!!!
It is important to remember that due to the complexity of the song this is one that just gets better and better the more you listen to it. Once you start to memorize passages it will take you to wonderful places. First time for me was in 1977 while in high school and I was a little confused. They I listened to it again and found I enjoyed it more. I could not possibly tell you how many times I have heard it to date but it had to be at least several dozen times if not close to triple digits. The more you learn it, the more you like it. A song I will never grow tired of.
You mentioned that it must be great to hear/see live. There’s a live Queen’s Park Regent version from 1975, the sound isn’t the greatest but you’ll get to see Jon going absolutely bananas during the “battle.” Thankfully, however, the “Soon” section’s sound was almost perfect.
Nice how you picked up on Chris Squire's work on this track, even before you got into what Steve Howe is doing. Although to be fair, Steve's work is much more disguised by the production compared to Chris. From a guitarist's perspective, the first thing to know is that Steve is playing a Fender Telecaster for the first time on a Yes album. This contributes to the shrill attack in a lot of the guitar on this album. Secondly, new keyboard player Patrick Moraz brought a heavy dose of jazz fusion chops a la Jan Hammer and Return to Forever, so that's another major influence on this album. Finally, even by Yes standards this is a drums and percussion extravaganza. Many consider this album to be Alan White's finest work with Yes, and Jon Anderson is having way too much fun with all the old car parts he's throwing around. "Close to the Edge" probably still deserves to be considered progressive rock's penultimate masterpiece, but for many Yes fans "Gates" is at least a sentimental favorite. "Soon" is really sublime (and shows Jon's continuing love of Sibelius).
????
Chris's base always sounds like a lead guitar always proactive. And yes they can do this live extremely well. Was the ending an inspiration for the Lord of the Rings film score?
I would like to draw your attention to an album that you might also like. The (then) singer Jon Anderson released a new album ("True") with the "Band Geeks" about 2 months ago (just before his 80th birthday!). I find this album absolutely remarkable. Perhaps you would like to listen to the first song on the album. It's called "True Messenger". Prog at its finest.
This piece of music can only be matched by the classical masters! The rest of Relayer is just as good. Sound Chaser is Yes' most experimental work
blissfollowed by the beautiful To Be Over. What an accomplishment!!Best band, ever. Period.
There is an high quality pro-shot live video recording of Yes performing this with an orchestra. It is the best recorded version by far. Be the first YouTuber to react to it! Unfortunately, on YouTube it is divided into 3 separate videos, but it’s still great.
There's no YES without Jon Anderson ????????
If you want to hear it live the ultimate version is on YeSShows ????????
I used to do my mum's head in listening to this at top volume. "It's just bang, bang, bang!"
Still amazed that Dua Lipa hasn't made a "cover" of this one!! ????????????????????????
This song from Symphonic Live is so beautiful with a full orchestra! https://youtu.be/y_nf2bPfgYE?si=PT6pTJX4vkpWEZbn
Best prog song ever!?
YES is not just exceptional music, it is a transcendental experience! I suggest you listen to this next, if you haven't already: "The Revealing Science of God (Dance of the Dawn)" [from the album 'Tales from Topographic Oceans', 1973]. Thanks.
