VINTAGE TONE, NO HUM: Brandonwound Noiseless Jazzmaster Pickups
If you love your Jazzmaster and it’s classic vintage tone, but those big ol single coils got you singin’ the 60 cycle hum blues…have I got just the thing for you! Today I explore and review the Brandonwound Noiseless Jazzmaster pickups and compare them against the tried and true fan favorite, The Seymour Duncan Antiquity I Jazzmaster Pickups. Do they really get rid of the noise…and more importantly…do they still have that iconic Jazzmaster tone? Let’s find out.

Just installed a set of noiseless Fralin and set of noiseless Kinman Surfmaster pickups in a few of my MIJ 60s Jazzmasters. Both are great but I think overall I like the Fralin pickups more because they seem to be more of a neutral Jazzmaster replacement pickup. The Kinmans are excellent but are a bit hotter with more mid range & less of the airy jazzmaster sound. They also add a bit of physical weight to the guitar. I still need to feel them out more and perhaps adjust pickup height. The unexpected added weight for the kinmans may be a deal breaker though.
Herad does anodized guards in gold, silver, and black, and they significantly cut down on noise in my experience. Sometimes in the city there’s so much EMI that it doesn’t matter how you stand or how much you’ve shielded your guitar, in which case middle position and lower gain sounds best, and often does anyway.
Thanks for this. Back to back, to my ears the noiseless consistently sound a little lower output (less growl with gain), a bit more mid-rangy, less shimmer, and seem to have less sustain. I suppose a little compression and brightening of the EQ settings could clear a lot of that up. This comparison doesn't win me over to noiseless JM pickups yet, but I'm glad people are working on it and making strides. The JM hum has always been a bit out of control. Nels Cline can just lean into it and pull it off, but most of us are not Nels Cline.
Love the Sherwood green Jazzmaster!
Since I shielded the cavities in my Vintera II Jazzmaster I have since had no problems with noise. The particular issue with extra noise in either neck or bridge settings I have not experienced.
Good stuff as always, definitely prefer antiquity I. I just adore that wild, unbridled sound for jazzy and jags. Noiseless sounds a bit muffled and sterile to me.
????????????
The Duncan's sounds 15% more to my taste. The silent pickups do sound very close. I've always used a noise gate with single coils. Noiseless work best for recording. Playing live wound be loud enough to mask the 60cycle hum, let's make Playing loud great again.????( Great video. )
I also just wanted to clarify, that in the beginning of the video when I showcase the standby noise coming from the single coil Seymour Duncan Antiquity Jazzmaster Pickups vs the Brandonwound Noiseless Jazzmaster Pickups without any playing – in both cases the Tubescreamer was engaged which is a testament to how quiet the Brandonwounds really are.
