A BETTER Way to “Wake Up” Your Guitar Tone?

Today I look at the Titanum 12 Phantom Power Preamp. This unit can take your guitar pickups and boost the signal while filtering the frequencies to enhance the natural attributes of your pickups to make them clearer and more aggressive. I compare this to the Seymour Duncan Blackout Preamp.

  • I have a few thoughts:
    1. Can you add another video in which you do the 18v mod to both preamps? I've read that you get less distortion with the Blackout this way (and you can show another graph – I love graphs!) If the 18v mod can get you almost the same sound as the Titanum then it's definitely not worth paying the extra $200.

    2. It's hard to compare the preamps because both seem so different. I had an Agile 28" baritone with SD Blackout pups and I loved the sound. However, I was only playing really heavy stuff (eg death metal, grindcore, etc) and your setup is completely different from mine. The Titanum doesn't sound as "heavy" but that might be beneficial in a live situation (especially with a cranked tube amp) or with songs where the amount of distortion changes.

    3. Go nuts and demo both of these with a boost. Depending on the voltage of the preamps, it would be interesting to hear (especially the Titanum). I bet the Titanum would sound amazing with a TS-9 after it.

  • Really interesting video dude and thank you for including us in it! This is a great sounding module/circuit. Awesome video!

  • Seems like the same results could be achieved less intrusively by just running a Fortin Grind/33 or a Pepers Dirty Tree in front of your amp?

  • Are those DI clean tones clipping all over the place because the preamps couldn't handle the signal within the guitar itself, or were you clipping the interface? Are they running at 9V, and can they run at 18V to increase headroom?

  • I really dig how this sounds. I wonder if it can take external power from something like an EMG ES-918 for space-limited guitars where you might be able to fit the unit, but getting a battery in there won't work without routing.
