Why does only one chord fit this note? Why THIS chord for THAT particular note in the song, how do you know or determine that???

Hi. For 40 years I have been wanting to learn how to harmonize guitar melodies with real confidence. I first learned the guitar from Fredrick Noads excellent 'Solo Guitar Playing': He made the learning easy by taking out all the technical gargon which so confuses me – minim, breve; semi breve, etc.. Instead he called the notes by what they truly are: 1/4; 2/4; 3/4 and 4/4 – it made for easier understanding and learning. Can you recommend a thorough book which will teach all one needs to know about Chords and how to harmonize any Melody, without the annoyance of trying to understand all the technical terms like 'Dominent'; 'Sub-dominent', etc etc? All the gargon makes me feel cold! Hoping you can help me. Regards, Paul
Not all guitar melodiel let you harmonize with chords… Could you harmonise Chet Atkin's Main Street Breakdown, for example? It could do with some kind of alternating bass line backing.

this is a great lesson, but surely C also has a C in its chord construction besides Amin7 – because they are family substitutions. I am assuming you mean the chord voicings chosen is dicatated by which lead melody note is played on the highest string?
