to me, a big feature that gets over looked is the EQ options in the software. not only can you use 2 different EQ's, but you can select where in the signal path it will operate. it took me a while to get the hang of it but my Katana setup now is my favourite rig I've ever had and the EQ is a big part of it. I do understand its overwhelming getting into the software to get everything just how you like it but to me, if I save hundreds of dollars on this amp instead of getting a fancy tube head and the "cost" is that I have to spend a bit of time getting over the learning curve, its well worth it. Ive used Marshalls, fenders, Vox's and a couple other digital amps and the katana would be in my top 3 even if it were just as expensive as the big name tube amps. My katana is hands down the wisest and most valuable gear purchase I've ever made.
Can you play this head on its own or do you need a cabinet? Because i know the Boss Katana-Head MkII 100w has some speakers in it.
I can see calling Hammond non-spring reverb (aka digital) "verb", but I'm guessing you call all reverb 'verb'.
(why 'Hammond'? Because Laurens Hammond invented spring reverb. See Ken Griffin's Special Effects page (great pics), and note just a few short years later Laurens invented the smaller 'tank' units we are all familiar with.
How is the Katana as an acoustic guitar amp? Would love to see someone(@darrellBraunGuitar) demo an acoustic guitar through one
Worth mentioning it also takes pedals really well if you have fave pedals you want to use.
@3:35 ish , the initial clean demo still had the "edge of breakup" sound when playing chords – I'd have to think it can get a totally clean sound, like a Roland 120
Gigging a mk1 100 combo four years now , got it used for £150 brilliant amp super loud and portable
Sounds great, never used the 100w setting , the Marshall JVM and 4×12 now redundant under the stairs
Thanks for a great demo using AFFORDABLE guitars!
does anybody know that is it possible to use this with a multi effect pedal( like an ampero II stomp )??
That amp is SICK! And your plying is too. Thanks for the demo DB. ✌️
Why the same expression on every one of your videos ????? … Its a turn off for watching your videos….
I just picked up a MK2 100w combo for $100 and it's loud and crisp on the .5w setting! Freaking awesome for a c note! Just got a stereo cable for the foot switch and it's like having a full pedal board.
I wanted to like this amp, since I was looking for something that I could use for practise as well as small gigs. Unfortunately, the Katana sounds thin, muddy and boxy. If you dial up the Gain and Presence, you can get something close to a Vox, but that's about it. There’s virtually no bass, and when you hike up the bass, the amp sounds like it’s muffled, as though a blanket has been thrown over it. A far better choice is to save up another $700 and buy a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe.
I purchased the Boss Katana mk2 100 combo a few month ago, I cant stand it. I now need to buy another amp. This thing is going in the bin.
Hi, l know its a while ago since you did the above but, would you consider doing a shoot out with the Boss Katana GEN 3 100 W versus Fenders 100W GTX as l am undicided which to buy and l live in Cyprus Europe where no music shops here carry both modles, love your show, regards Kevin
This demo was going well until he used humbuckers…
Marshall DSL 40 CR vs Katana 100. Comments Please
Really appreciate your honest good reviews, truly appreciated ????????
I love using the clean boost on the katanas dirty tones..
Sustain for days with good definition.
The katanas love the celestion type a speaker, if you don't have the waza speaker anyways.. I put a type a in My ktn 50 mkii and man the tone really came alive. The stock ktn 100 speaker is good though.. I have a ktn 50 mkii ktn 100 mkii and picked up a artist mki for cheap. Now they are coming out with the generation 3 katana, which should be interesting..? Have some spider v line 6 and catalyst 60 and 100 as well.. all are pretty sweet sounding amps. Can't really go wrong with the latest modeling amps each have their own signature voicings as well. As always great demos you put out, thanks for all your time and work..
But how does it sound in the mix with a live band ?
My son brought one home a couple months ago, my JCM 800 was having some work done to it so i plugged that into my marshall 1960 cab and that amp gave me some good tones, I'm still not ready to switch to the modeling amps but it is fun to mess with especially downloading different sounds, that's the Golden ticket of this amp.
I’ve gigged with a katana for over two years now. Played more than 200 shows and have had no issues with the amp. I have Mesas, Marshall’s, fender, peavey, Gretsch, Victoria and others. Got tired of carrying a heavy amp around.
I have 3 amps and I want this so bad. The madness must stop ????
I’m mostly interested in cleans & edge of breakup and you’re demo def sounds different and way better than the others out there. Curious if it’s cuz you are recording direct out versus mic’ing the cabinet. This demo sounds very very good. Makes me wanna get one
I just got a 100 MkII head. Still trying to figure it out and get that killer sound. I do with the 100 MkII head had the controls facing forward like the Artist does. I'm not sure who thought the controls facing up was a good idea but they were wrong. I can see the logic of it in some situations but not with a head.
At this point in computer technology in 2024, we rellly should have competitively priced amps powered by the entire Helix software/ hardware, and similar situations from other companies, however all of the amp companies hinder their technology to sell us limited amps for a few hundred dollars, and then hide the useful, mess limited amps and modelers behind thousands of dollars worth of purchases. The Katana, Catalyst, Code, Spark, etc all have much limited capacity compared to something like the Helix or Guitar Rig, which isn't really excusable in 2024. They want to make $1000 profit for a cheap computer in a shell, all because they have tons of decent amp models loaded into a box, something you can get for $200 or less on your own computer as software.
