Drop Tuning: Which Works Best? Digitech Drop, Whammy DT, Fractal FM3 & Axe-FX III

In the world of modeling & analog pedals, there are many ways to shift your guitar’s tuning without having to have a spare on standby…but which is best for you?
In this video, we’re going to give side-by-side audio examples of 4 approaches to this gear dilemma: Digitech’s Drop & Whammy DT, alongside the Fractal Audio FM3 & Axe-FX III pitch blocks.

Sonic examples, featuring the entire 4-octave range of the guitar:
• Clean – arpeggiated, strummed
• OD – chordal riff, single-note riff into power chords
• Leads – unison bends, sweep picking, pedal point, dyads

*For the lower tunings, I also incorporate the Fractal Audio low cut feature, as well as a side-by-side comparison with a 7-string tuned standard (with no processing).

Then we’ll discuss some pros/cons, tips, tricks, & price points for each of units. Buckle up, & feel free to scroll around the timeline for your tonal needs!

  • Pleasantly surprised how well the artifacts were hidden with the higher gain tones, even at A!

  • Good video, would have been even better If you had measured the latency of the different units so we have number 😉

  • i don't use the pitch block in this fashion (usually octaver style stuff instead where it does ok) admittedly the newer pitch block updates have improved things a bit, but compared to a separate EHX or Digitech pedal it's not going to be the same, but for my usage it's ok

the digitech drop needs 250ma from what i can see the whammy DT 288ma , if it's just one single extra pedal, you can also do a USB power bank with a suitable USB-9v adapter (i've got one that does 1A or 1000ma which is super handy for single pedals , quick usage)
