Todd Johnson – Studying with Gary Willis /// Scott’s Bass Lessons

In today’s podcast Todd Johnson reveals his mastery of the 6-string bass.

There’s a lot of categorisation in the bass world. If you play 4-string bass, you’re categorised as a 4-string player – and if you play an extended-range bass, people might look at you as if you’re an alien! Well, perhaps it’s time to step into the unfamiliar sonic territory offered by a 6-string bass.

Todd Johnson is the kind of bass player who makes it look easy. Over almost four decades as a professional bassist, Todd has developed a reputation that belies his formidable talent for conjuring flurries of fingerpicked melody amid some brilliant chords. Aside from his work as a performer, Todd has also acted as bass teacher to a host of top names.

In this episode you’re going to learn:
– How Todd first discovered the bass guitar.
– About his time as the house bassist at Caesars Palace.
– What he learned from studying with Gary Willis at Hollywood’s Musicians institute.
– About his signature Zon Sonus TJ 6-string bass.
– And much, much more…

  • I play bass and drums and this sounds like me and my drum teacher. He used to regularly give me a 2hr. instead of 1 hr. lesson. Then, he had to change his availability. Last lesson he kept the store open past closing time and then talked to me in the parking lot for about 15 min. in light rain.

  • So in the merit of studying, I have recently realized that my practice is not really well, organized or well structured so I can properly spend my time practicing. Do you have (or could you make) a good video explaining how a practice should be structured (like the first 15 mins are for scales, ect…) I am currently thinking that I should practice for 1-2 hours a day and in a month maybe 3-4 since I will be learning music in cegep (like a pre-college thing we have in Quebec, after 3 years I will officially be able to be called a "pro", diploma and all), but for this to happen I need a proper practice routine. Is there anything you could recommend?

And if there is already a video on this in this channel, could someone link it to me? Can't seem to find one.
