One Guitar, One Amp, No Pedals Challenge – Dan Vs Mick

Back to basics with a super simple rig – what will they choose?

Welcome to the show! Like it or loathe it, there remains a kind of noble dignity associated with the simplicity of a guitar-cable-amp rig. No fancy pedals, no cheating with MIDI and no other complication to interrupt the pure musical flow of self-expression.
Or at least that’s how a lot of people see it.
In this episode then, we grab that particular nostalgic chestnut by the horns by choosing just One Guitar & One Amp to see if we can cover a range of tones. And while we’re at it, how about we forget about channel switching and multi-mode amps too?
Enjoy the show!

  • The Two Rock is great, but I always seem to slightly prefer the sound of Amplified Nation amps over Two Rocks when it comes to Dumble style amps.

  • Synergy 50 head would allow you to have two different preamp modules with 4 channels with 4 different tone possibilities. For example, the Friedman BB/BE module would give you a great Bassman like clean channel and a Plexi like gain channel. And for a guitar, an HSS Strat, so you have both humbuckers and single coils.

  • I know y'all love your tubes (or valves), but why no modeling amp with built-in effects? Was that not allowed?

  • Those two are so into their favourite gear, that they are not able to think outside the box. Why wouldn‘t you choose a HSS guitar and a neat 2 or 3 channel amp? Even if you mustn‘t use a switch pedal, you could easily switch it by hand while playing.

  • Great episode! This makes me want to get a splitter so I can fire up my Boogie .50 Caliber and my Mark IIB together.

  • Love this concept. I recently got frustrated with my pedal board due to twiddle paralysis and a mystery buzz. Plugged my Reverend Double Agent OG straight into my Marshall DSL40CR and man! My go-to guitar and amp had all the tone and flexibility I've been chasing for years. I've since purged my pedal board… Mostly just tuner-fuzz-delay-reverb. Tonal Nirvana and zero twiddling. Again, it's been inspiring to see you guys pull off the same concept in such a brilliant way.

  • I really thought Dan I was going to go with the SG / Les Paul Jr and the Vox, cranked, with heavy usage of the volume control roll-off technique.

  • So does this mean an AC15 would be just too quiet to pair wet-dry with a Deluxe Reverb, or is this a bad analogy because in this case you have no drive pedals, therfore you have to turn the DRRI up higher to get overdrive? If you had your normal setup with overdrive pedals, would they then be a good match? Would an AC30 be too loud to pair with DRRI?

  • Mick mucking about talking and playing with his tuners should be saved til after the vid (optional extra?). Dan's guitar is priority for the flow.

  • A year in the future here, hearing Dan’s AC15 with his SG would be awesome. I have a HW AC15 and my CS 61 SG sounds absolutely stellar through it.

  • In my opinion, tonal diversity and clean and dirty diversity is more dynamic than effects. A multi channel Amp with a guitar is absolutely amazing and definitely enough for even genre bending music. When your tools are meat and potatoes it forces the creativity to come from your playing and understanding of song structure, texture, motifs, melody, etc.

  • Have just watched this again as it is SOOOO good! One thing I have noticed doing so many covers gigs, and that is the low level gain sounds "clean up" when in a band situation…..I don't mean the compressed OD tones, but bright clear, crunchy tones always sound cleaner to my ear when the band kicks in, so to that end, actually Mick probably nails it overall, with his "one under drive away" comment being not necessary actually.
This is a cracking video, and I was yelling at Dan "PLEASE out a clean boost in front of either the AC15 or the Matchless and forget about delay!" ????????
These videos are truly priceless lads…..never stop doing them! ????

  • P Bass and an Ampeg B15. Heaven.
For guitar, i’d pick a Tele and an AC15. Dan’s right on the money! There isn’t much they can’t do convincingly together.

  • HI Guy's i have a weird problem hope you have a suggestion > My tube amp is super quiet when i go direct into it, when i put in the cable from the pedal board WITHOUT any pedals turned On , i am getting very loud noise/hum…without any volume on also from pedal.. ?? don't get it .. Help ???

  • I would choose my Marshall JCM 900
50 Watt High Gain Dual Reverb model 4502 with foot switch. For guitar I would use my Epiphone Classic Les Paul with Semour Duncan 59's and Gibson volume and tone pots in it.
It really does the Brian Robertson thing well.

  • Edit: I don't particularly care for the ac15. Brought one home… going to return it for a 57 custom pro with a 15"

One issue, why go with an ac15 when he could have fixed issue with an ac30. This proves to never under purchase for your needs. If you actually take gigs, buy an amp with some headroom. Its half the instrument

  • so talented, both are really great guitar players. It's frustrating that they are not allowed to ever play any good songs. I don't know how they got banned from playing any lick that isn't complete shit but its not fair, they seem like good guys

  • My question would be: Why not the King Tone Imperial? It would solve all the issues Mick had with the Deluxe Reverb.

  • My deserted island rig is a Fender Deluxe Reverb (with bright cap cut and speaker change) and a Gibson Les Paul (with paf “style” humbuckers, PIO bumblebee caps, and 50’s wiring). Nothing else is needed. There’s a reason the DR is one of the most recorded amps of all time. ????????

  • Awesome episode guys and thanks so much for everything you do on this channel. It's always a joy to tune in. Have to say I'm feeling the gravitational pull of the Fender Deluxe Reverb after watching this, but regarding versatility in one amp I still worship my Marshall Jubilee 25/50 combi with 3 channels: 1) clean, 2) gain (via footswitch) and 3) a transparent overdrive crunch (from pulling out the volume knob). Really useful.
