Mind Blowing Guitar Tech That Will Change How You Play Forever

Universal Audio ANTI 1992 and the guitar tech inside claims to sound perfect from the presets! But will the technology in this pedal REALLY make it sound like a Peavey 5150 tube amp in a full tilt simulation? Find out in this close up review.

In June 2022 I reviewed inside and out firstly a Universal Audio UA dream 65 amp simulator pedal that at the time was quite impressive in the way it was built. Later within weeks I also reviewed the Universal Audio UA FX Ruby 63 amp simulator pedal. There are links above to the reviews for anyone interested.

Later UA introduced this FX pedal – the ANTI 1992 that is also an amp simulator pedal in a very nice red colour. Now this pedal is supposed to simulate a Peavey 5150 (probably from the 1992 vintage period as the name suggests) but is it really like the real amp? Would Eddie Van Halen chosen an ANTI 1992 against a Peavey 5150? Well, United Audio tell me that the pedal is excellent and with perfect tones ready to record direct from the ANTI 1992 itself to the studio desk. But I guess most makers would suggest that, so I decided to take a closeup of the pedal as I always tend to in my inside and out reviews. This video is the result.

Now many will know that the Peavey 5150 of 1992 was basically a ‘game changer’ (I hate to use those over used words) in the realms of real tube amps and I guess that’s why UA chose to make this pedal along with many other models totaling 20 devices here in 2025 as follows:

* Golden Reveberator
* Starlight Echo Station
* Astra Modulation Machine
* Woodrow ‘55 Instrument Amp
* Dream ‘65 Reverb-Amp
* Ruby ‘63 Top Boost Amp
* Lion ’68 Super Lead Amp
* Heavenly Plate Reverb
* Evermore Studio Reverb
* Orion Tape Echo
* Del-Verb Ambiance Companion
* Galaxy ‘74 Tape Echo & Reverb
* Max Preamp & Dual Compressor
* 1176 Studio Compressor
* Teletronix LA-2A Studio Compressor
* Flow Vintage Tremolo
* Brigade Chorus & Vibrato
* ANTI 1992 High Gain Amp
* Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive Special Amplifier
* Knuckles ‘92 Dual Rec Amplifier Pedal
* OX Stomp

So it should be construed that Universal Audio are making good money from the UA FX series of amp simulators. But that is not a real indicator that the pedals are ‘good’ or ‘bad’. So I decided to complete and inside and out closeup review showing the quality, and pedal with things like warranty, prices, any issues I found and much more. So did this pedal meet those ‘it’s ready to record out of the box’ chiming in from UA? Find out in this incredibly close up review.

There are also FOUR audio tracks from 36:59 onward that you might want to listen to. For me, the direct to desk tones were NOT good, so I used a very good tube amp setup clean (Mezzabarba N Zero 1) and a Marshall cab with aged Celestion speakers in there and an AKG microphone to capture the real tones. The direct to desk was disappointing.

THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED REVIEW AND MY OPINIONS ARE MY OWN VIEW AS A PAYING CUSTOMER, BEING INFLUENCED BY THE MANUFACTURER BLURB AND THEN CHECKING OUT THE PRODUCT AS I FOUND IT IN REALITY IN MY RECORDING STUDIO WITH FRIENDS.

I have spent considerable time creating this video it is a completely truthful independent review – so check it out and don’t just watch the sales videos from others!

  • I think YouTube deleted my comment on the pdf manuals, but you can navigate to UA Audio’s page of manual links, clink on a manual, and then use the icon like your going to share, and choose Open in Books, and it auto-creates a pdf you can view in books app or email to others, etc. I have all my pedal manuals as pdfs I can open in my Books app

  • I have this pedal, the Knuckles (1992 Rev F Dual Rectifier), the Lion 68 (Marshall 68 Super Bass, 68 Super Lead, and the Brown model (68 SL on Variac at 90v), and the Dream ‘65 (Princeton 65 Reverb). I love these pedals. I don’t use the cab sims on them, but send them to a couple power amps and a couple 112’s and a 212 cab, but through my CAB M+ so I get XLR with cab sim also. I a 50 watt all tube Plexi, several tube Plexi preamps, a D-Sound VH-510 3 tube, 3 channel 5150 preamp pedal, a Dual Rec tube preamp, 8 tube amps in all. I still love these UAFX pedals. Particularly the Anti 1992 and the Lion 68. The Knuckles pedal actually allows you to bypass the digital preamp and just use the digital power amp simulation if you want also or Vice-versa. These were quite a bit less than buying the full amps, have a great feel them ( tube preamps and amps a little more dynamic response but the pedals still do great), and are easy to integrate into my setup, plus all the hidden features you need the app to access, are set it and forget it type settings, so I rarely access the app. It works every time for me when I do need to access the app though. These are great for a backup solution with a pedal power amp, or just great in general if you like saving space and have a power amp and cabs already setup. Compared to my tube preamps (which need a good tube power amp or at least some great power amp emulation), the prices aren’t that bad. It’s actually the only digital amp modeling I can really feel satisfied with. I like my Hotone Ampero II Stomp OK, but these have better amp modeling and feel IMO. I don’t need the Fractal setup as I already have a Multifx unit I like plenty and some regular pedals too. I also do not need that many amp models. A few good ones that satisfy is plenty. My next modeler I like as much as the Hotone, but still feels like dialing in a regular AIAB pedal, is the Atomic Ampli-firebox MkII. That’s a nice modeler too, but the UAFX pedals feel better and sound better to me. I love my tube gear, but there is room for digital for me with the UAFX amp pedals and they feel like dialing in a good preamp pedal with their controls. I’ve only had to update once the whole time I’ve had them. I make my own presets or just dial in as needed with the pedal controls. Thanks for the review!

  • In my experience, the best digital emulation of a 5150 on the market. No ability to load even one IR is a killer for me, though.

  • Did your anti dote on you when you were a young whipper snapper?
    Another great review. I have the UA ox box and several of their software plugins, and am very satisfied with all of them.
    I am not looking for an amp in a pedal, since I like my Blackstar, but I don’t have to carry it around. It just sits in my studio.
    Great playing by both of you.
    Thanks!!!

  • Excellent review as always, thank you. I have the Lion. Only used it once live because though the sound of the tone to me was 10/10, the feel was 0/10. It just didn't cut the mustard live. As I heard in your video even though you played it going through a valve (tube) amp something exciting was missing. The Lion for me, doesn't feel big enough, has no sustain at all, quite dead, after two minutes it feels boring and doesn't inspire me. I had to use a boost pedal into it which helped a bit but it still sounded boring. It was the worst I've ever played live and affected my performance. Don't think we will be asked back. Trying to tweak the pedal live was a mine field as can't get a mobile out to mess about with whilst trying to play the guitar. It was impossible on the fly to get both preset changed to how I required because the controls are shared and can't see where the dials were set when changing back from one preset without taking a photo or writing down or marking the pedal which you can't do in the middle of a song or in-between songs. I had no lead sound as the pedal by itself just couldn't do it, as I used a boost permanently on for the clean and crunch (both presets). It had the exact eq and drive that I had in my head but was lifeless. I haven't had that issue with other digital devices. Though so far all the ones I have tried (Helix,Tonex and UA Lion) feel like the action on my les Paul was too low and choking out on every fret. I experimented adjusting the action later at home and there is nothing wrong with it. Through my Tsl head, the action feels high but through the these devices feels too low'. I would like to know if anyone else feels this?
    The pros for this UA pedal are
    Compact
    10/10 tone sound
    Not complicated
    Bluetooth
    Smartphone app
    Innovative and popular brand
    3 year warranty

    Cons
    Lifeless
    No sustain
    Shared controls
    Not battery powered
    No PSU supplied
    No XLR out
    MyPC software (Windows 10) was too out of date to register the UA pedal but line 6 software installed OK and worked for the helix! ?
    Unknown chip (perhaps there is schematic that UA could provide to a repairer with the chip details if they were asked and was needed in 3 years time?)

    Hey @tonymckenzieofficial any chance you can review one of those new Marshall pedals anytime soon please? ????????And**t*ns demoed them and they seem great but they were playing them through a Marshall valve head so … er .. They would sound like a great Marshall!
