Welcome to another gear comparison on the channel! In this video, we dive deep into the world of amp capture technology, testing out three of the most popular platforms: the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and the Neural Amp Modeler (NAM). Get ready for an in-depth analysis of their performance and a surprising revelation!
In the modern age of digital amp modeling, there’s a plethora of excellent options. But what I want to know is: which amp capture technology reigns supreme? To test it out, I’ve taken an amp capture of the same amp, captured with the same gear, by the same creator. The only difference, the captures were made with the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and the Neural Amp Modeler. Let’s find out which one delivers the best results.
Starting with the iconic 1966 Marshall JT45 Crunch and a Benson Chimera captured by Amalgam Audio, we’ll put the units through the paces. We’ll first assess the raw amp tones, then start to introduce pedals. Because that’s the big differentiator for me: most digital sounds great by itself, but once you add pedals to the system… Things really start to sound different. Pedal enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Witness how each platform interacts with pedals using the JHS Moonshine + Big Sky combo. Explore the nuances of the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and NAM as they handle the pedalboard signal.
Finally, in attempt to eliminate bias, we’ll do a blind test. There’s a lot of hype and haters for the Quad Cortex, ToneX, and Neural Amp Modeler. Let’s see if you can distinguish the platforms without knowing which is which.
At the end of the tests, we’ll crown our king of the three; which amp capture modeler sounds best. Remember, in the grand scheme of things, the differences between these platforms might be negligible when integrated into a mix. input gain set to 0?if yes you have to ajust in nam to have the right tone of the amp can be less or more gain
Quad Cortex is obviously the best sound for me. Tonex and neutral are similar.
The first 2 sound like a fart at the end, QC takes it by far

NAM always wins
The QC probably sounds the least like the original, but it sounds best to me. It has this warm buttery quality that’s tough to beat in my opinion.
The tones sounds dull and lifeless. The neural sounds too high fi and sounds fizzy the qc seems to be the best of both and would sit in a mix great

The Neural sounds bright with less low-end and the Cortex sounds warmer with less high-end. The Tonex sounds like a combination of the two, how cool. Oh, I have tinnitus.
They are pretty different but what does the initial amp sound like?
All sounds like shit. You need better reference for comparison.
I think you signal was recorded to hot. I can hear the digital clipping on the low notes. I can hear the difference on the other notes and the toned definitely sounds better to my ears.

Neural Amp Modeler sounded brighter but I hear more depth to the attack and notes in terms of human interaction coming through. They're all amazing though

tonex seem to have the low end the others dont
I'm surprised QC keeps sounding most pleasant to my ears since the other two get so much more praise. QC also is the only one I can happily gig with! And yes I know Tonex pedal is a thing, I own it, it is my backup and I gigged with it once.

I firmly believe most of the difference comes from from cab sims nowadays. Were they running through the same IR?
ToneX is more realistic when you know the amp. Then NAM, more definition but probably modeled from another setting (less bass) et the left one is completely off imo
Can’t decide between qc and tonex ????
They all sound like they have fuzz especially on the lower notes. Not my thing. But they all sound the same to me. Its always better live.
