  • Bought the Pumpkin Pi! I saw Billy's video on Sweetwater demoing the Op Amp Pi. Plus will help get that Gilmour muff.

  • Nothing to do with the subject, but what synth is used in the intro, starting at around 12 seconds ?
I came for the Muffs, but got interested in the synth ????

  • For me, definetely Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream, the sound on it redefined my ears :D. I have roughly 5 spots left on my first pedalboard and the orange big muff is going in there!

  • in my local guitar shop, they have an original 1968 guild foxey lady, the two knob version. i would buy it but im not rich

  • The only one that sounded different to me was the original Russian green Muffin. Sounded more powerful and fuller than the reissue which still was super close.
    The rest sounded identical tho.

  • I just recently got an early 2000 NYC big muff and I found it to be very different from a current production big muff (mine is from 2014, but I guess not much has changed since then). It's like the early 2000 one sounds much clearer, and also has a lot more output volume. I like it better than the current one for bass because it sounds like the "clean" sound kinda comes through. With a strat, it kinda keeps the attack audible, and you can hear the variations of the guitar's tone knob, whereas with my current Muff, the sound is much more compressed. I have no idea if all the early 2000 ones are like that, but I find it useful to have both ^^

  • Worth knowing that the Fran circuit variation of the NYC big box only lasted until something like 2007-2008. After that, they put the regular clipping diodes back in and may have made some other changes. Good thing IMO, I really don't care for the big muff sound with schottky diodes. It's very loud, but the distortion is too mild/OD-ish for a BMP.
Low value (100-150ohm) emitter resistors, higher value clipping capacitors, and 1n4148 is where it's at ???? at least for the classic muff sound. I modded my 07 to be Rams head inspired.
I love my Russian style as well of course, the first pedal I built back in 2012! Might go for an Opamp build soon….

  • My dad had a prototype with Foxey Lady written across it. Apparently it had been given to Hendrix and then past around a few time until it ended up with my dad.

  • yeah – they are all amazing!!
I love the old originals. But at the same time I am happy that the reissues are on the market with easy access and imo great sound quality. I own the green russian reissue and the ram's head Pi reissue. And a few interpretations of other builders (Vick Audio Ram's Head and Greer Tarpit). Love them all.
The first artist that comes to my mind is for sure David G. His sounds with different BM pedals ist just divine imo.
    Thanks for these great videos!!

  • I just bought a nano big muff pi today and I have a question. The enclosure is usually white, but mine is steel with a decal. It looks cool but I’m trying to figure out why it’s not the same as the others. Was there a run where they didn’t use white paint? Can anybody help me? Just curious

  • When I was about 18 I built a Big Muff with a local pedal builder. After we put it together he sent me home with a bag of transistors to swap out and play around with to get the sound I wanted because of the stories about the parts variations.
It was crazy how big and crunchy mine ended up being compared to the modern reissue one of my friends had.
I wish I still had that pedal

  • I think any of them would be fine cuz the differences aren’t huge, but that being said I preferred the green sovtek/green reissue

  • Having owned all the reissues and some vintage originals, I gotta say, the Big Muff with tone wicker is my fav. Second place is the Rams Head reissue, but it's also the noisiest.

  • For all the Muff aficionados out there: The key to keeping the mud under control is putting an EQ pedal in front of the Muff. The Muff heavily compresses your signal, and the reason these pedals get muddy is the quiet rumbling frequencies generated by all guitar pickups, which the compression makes much louder (comp makes loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder). I lop off everything below 50-60hz (depending on the bands of the EQ pedal) before the signal goes into the Muff. Now you have that great Muff fuzz texture and sustain without the mud.

You can also run an overdrive pedal in front of the Muff, as many overdrives have a hi-pass filter built in which does a similar thing. The Ibanez Tubescreamer has a very tight filter, Boss OD-1 has a less extreme filter, both work but I like the Boss better because I like to use it as a filter for my "clean" tone. I have ten overdrive pedals but the one I never turn off is the cheapest one, lol. I recently found out that J Mascis has used the overdrive-in-front method for decades, btw.

  • Yayyy!! Smashing Pumpkins!! I still have some of my collectors items from the 90s and 2000s. I was a superfan. Not really following what they do now for obvious reasons, but I was OBSESSED with them back in the day. Glad to hear a shout out.

  • I recently got into fuzz pedals, a mate lent me his Pi reissue (Little greenie in the vid) and I forgot I had it until I was packing, so I finally tested it out and now I don't think he's getting it back.

Since I had put a Lollar p90 into my '78 Ibanez PF, it's the sound I am sticking with for the current project.

  • a relevant question: the "Russian" mode in the Muffuletta is insipired by the black or by the green Russian? Because to me it seems to be leaning more towards the black one… am I wrong?

  • Josh you absolutely have to do an episode on the 'emperor of sound " pedal I think it's called that only 300 units being made

  • Tell me you grew up in the 90s without telling me you grew up in the 90s. “Celebrity Death Match style” lol
