When the Jesus Lizard released their seventh studio record, Rack, last September, it ended a 26-year hiatus between recordings, and lovers of raucous, steely rock music around the world rejoiced. As guitarist Duane Denison told PG’s Nick Millevoi in our feature story, the key to the album’s vitality—and reviving the band’s brutal sound—was simple: “Practice loud.”
Ahead of a hotly anticipated U.K. tour celebrating the record, the band gathered at SIR’s rehearsal space in Nashville to do exactly that. PG’s Chris Kies stopped by to see what Denison and bassist David Wm. Sims were stuffing into their suitcases for the trip across the pond.

Even going back to Scratch Acid I've only ever seen David with 15" cabs.
As far as the 4×10 and 15, that is always a bad idea. If it's not biamped its a waste of acoustic energy. The 4×1- and 15 can't ever achieve coupling at low frequency because the phase vs frequency plots are so different. And barring some high tech unobtainium designs a 15 is always less efficient than a 4×10.
I like the sound of 15s better for the reasons David gives. Low end and attack. 4×10 always has that kind of humbucker effect. It sounds thicker, but also less distinct.
The MXR Bass Chorus Deluxe is also great on guitar.
I think I've met this guy before and had no idea he was bassist for The Jesus Lizard.
Bass tone is simple. no need for fuss when occupy the lows
In early eighties, a Fender P bass cost like U$300,00. 250 looks a bit expensive for a copy…
In all these years I have never heard David speak. I wish this was a much longer interview.
Not knowing this bassist….i heard Guitar Reserection (a hometown shop)…and knew he was from Austin. Great info and interview….Thanks!!
A lot of Memphis products are Aria adjacent Matsumoku products, at least the Japanese ones. The Korean ones look like low end Samick. I’m just another guy on the internet.
Don’t get too close to his pedals, he might kick you in the head
Adjusted for inflation thats close to $900 in today’s money….
Thank you, thank you, thank you for including David Sims in your Rig Rundown video!!!
Mr. Sims is the definition of THE bass man. Simple reliable rig, focused on playing not toys
