  • Good effort ???????? But the MOP tone was way off as u could hear in the comparison @ 11:30. The actual MOP tone sounded almost like AJFA being scooped AF! Your Orion tone was probably the closest to the album.

  • If I pick up my 7 string, I go into cave man chugga chugga, melt the earth mode. I pick up my Strat and i want to play country from the 50s. This is hoiw gear actually matters, in the way it inspires your playing

  • Only Kirk's leads were slaved from the Boogie preamp into the Marshall. All of the rhythms were Boogie only. That Marshall rumor is perpetuated on the internet despite Flemming stating in several interviews that the Marshall was only for Kirks leads. Second… EMGs were only used on Kirk's solos for Puppets. The rhythm parts were all James and he used Gibson Dirty Fingers in his Explorer and Duncan Invaders in his King V. And you absolutely need the Master Effects PMEQ to nail the Puppets tone by scooping the mids and boosting the highs and lows. The Aphex EQF-2 is necessary to nail the EQ curve and the PMEQ is the only easy readily available clone. Not to mention the Trident A range recording desk EQ which is available as a plug in. You need Duncan Invaders into a IIC+, into the PMEQ into the Trident Plug-in if you want to do this right.

  • I think with a lot of these tones, they have so much high end and let the bass fill the low end, which a lot of people seem to not nail

  • Anyone know where I can find an EQ pedal that has a 4.5k band like Rasmussen's notes mention? I'm not trying to copy the album tone per se, I just think it would be a cool addition to my rig.

  • In the "what else can I say about Metallica" comment you made you failed to mention about how they sold out and became posers.
    Just saying.

  • The photo of James's playing a white Jackson hardtail V through his Mark IIC+ Crunch Berries amp for the "Master of Puppets" album is well known. Still, the band has played ESP for so long that James playing a Jackson would probably strike many as curious.

The 80s were when Jackson was a new brand that had not yet been sold by Grover Jackson and Wayne Charvel. This means every 80s Jackson was more or less made to order in their shops in Glendora, San Dimas, and Ontario, CA.

This is why original 80s Jacksons can fetch such high prices. They are the "real" Jacksons. It was once the brand was sold to Akai around 1990 that Jackson became a mass-produced household name and not a just a high end custom guitar.

The post 1990 custom shop models are nice as well, but I would feel real pride in owning a guitar made by Wayne or Grover themselves over 40+ years ago.

  • But the Rhythm tone was only the Mesa Mark 2c+
For the lead tone they used the Mark2c+ Plus the poweramp from the Marshall.
Thats what Flemming Rasmussen once said in an interview.

  • 'Actually', as an addendum about Hetfield primarily using the Explorers in the studio he said that he could almost never get the right sound from the King V and it was too uncomfortable to play sitting down. Considering he was probably playing for 12+ hours a day for months… that makes sense.

  • Bit of that top end boost I reckon would simply be James' playing too. Would've been accentuated in those palm mutes because as we know he has such an aggressive pick attack and really digs in

  • Fun Fact: In the song “Master of Puppets” James Hetfield uses an interesting EQ pedal which is a “PMEQ” or “Puppet Master Equalization”

  • A little bit too much mids IMO, but otherwise pretty close. That said, the album tones aren't as scooped as people said back in the day. I remember searching for information on how to make my Zoom 505 II sound like Master of Puppets back in the day, and it was always "maximum gain, bass and treble, + mids completely removed". And it sounded like ass, as you can probably imagine ????It is possible to get somewhat usable tones out of the 505 II, but that's not the way.

And I absolutely agree on the vibe thing, which is something that for example Glenn Fricker absolutely misses every time. Sure, you can make a cheap guitar sound exactly the same on record, but it won't feel the same to play as a premium guitar (or just a different guitar in the same price range, even). And that affects the performance. I'm not saying cheap guitars are crap though, and especially lately very good instruments can be had for almost nothing, but there is a difference.
