  • I've got one. Love it. Can be a challenge to tune for me. I'm a novice player at best so give me anything buy open chords to play and I'm toast… lol. I watched a lot of YouTube videos before I bought it. I'd certainly buy it again. And yeah.. plugged in acoustic just doesn't cut it although the Vangoa is better than most.

  • Hi … I just got the same one you are playing because of this video. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice it looks and how low the action is … it hit the “trifecta” for me as well.

One question , as far as tuning a 12 string : concert pitch or tuned down 1-2 steps ?

    Thanks !

  • Heh, I get the wife-pprehension thing – I'm 65 with 3 guitars (and another out on indefinite loan) and I'm itching to get a T-body in the same price range as the Vangoa (I'm an acoustic player looking to noodle around) – my wife would say, We gotta start decluttering!
I think I'm gonna pull the trigger though. But thanks for this thorough review! I have been eyeballing this model too. My observations: sounds good but thin, kinda like the Cort 12- that I had once. It must be super-light too, judging how you can maneuver it. I see a ton of lacquer on it, which is a selling ploy on their part, they could have done a satin finish and charged $10 less
and it might be more resonant. But a bone nut and saddle is a nice touch, along with the other goodies. Good deal all-around!
PS: Forgot to mention, the preamp does make it sound meatier, I really do like that sound you got out of it in that regard!

  • One other amusing aside.
When I first got my guitar, my room mate (ex gf) was flustered that I got another guitar. I only had two before the 12, but she still asked why I needed another.
I played a random riff. She never said another word about my choice. ????
Iykyk. Lol. My wife all these years later helps find cool ways to display my collection in our home. She gets it. ❤

  • I dont know that Id call a 12 a novelty instrument. Id say it might be an advanced instrument. Too many tunes using a 12 that have cemented a sound average guitar players strive to copy with just six strings and cant.
Secondly, I once suffeeed a guitar players snarky remark that "you cant play leads on a 12" . Thank you for the comment that you like cutaways because it helps with your lead work. 12 strung leads are extraordinary in volume (fullness, not loudness) and really can make a song that much better.
I owned a 12 for many years before youtube luthiery repair videos. Yep. Lost it after a neck snap trauma. Thank you for reviewing this Vangoa.

  • Hey Lonny. I really enjoyed your playing and review. I own thirteen 12 string guitars right now. My only point here is that I'm an idiot and you have plenty of room. Best pronunciation of sapele, too. Take care and be well. Mark

  • I love that you played wanted dead or alive by bon jovi! one of the most iconic 12 string acoustic songs! Looking forward to seeing you on tour with bvb

  • What would I have to do for BVB to cover Bon Jovi or Def Leppard.
    Anyways, that’s a beautiful guitar.

  • ????! I like how you are wide verse about the different music genres you like and know. My mom liked the Beatles cover you did! She's very fussy about what music she likes.????

  • I absolutely love the sound of the 12-string! It really rounds out the notes and makes a song sound a lot fuller. It's definitely a pretty guitar, too. Glad you were able to get it and add it to your collection. Also, who tf actually plays dead or alive on a 6-string? That's sacrilege XD

  • Love the sound of the 12 string! Definitely nice to listen to its sound after work. I agree that it sounds way better mic’ed up than plugged in. The difference of timbre is stark. The guitar itself is beautiful too. That shade of brown is probably my favorite. Not a fan of shiny guitars, but this is one I’d make an exception for.

I totally agree with how you determine if an instrument is going to work for you. The feeling when you hold it is crucial. If it doesn’t feel like it’s your instrument, you probably won’t play it very well even if it has a good tone and is in perfect condition.

Loved this video, Lonny! Can’t wait for the upcoming tour! I still can’t believe it’s happening, and probably won’t until I’m in Louisville waiting for my spooky boys to start the show ????
