What tone did you like best Van Hagar or classic DLR Van Halen?
Everyone who tries to play VH using Eddie's rig and settings fail. And I'm not talking about skillset, it's the way he plays the guitar overall, the way he attacks or doesn't attack the strings, his light touch, his heavy touch, etc. His rig and "settings" (guitars included) are dialed in for him. You (meaning everyone) have more of a chance setting things up for the way you do things and then tweaking from there to match. Everyone does things differently with their hands and the gear needs to be compensated for this when trying to emulate. Some are easier to nail than others. For instance, it's easier to sound like SRV than EVH. I've never heard anyone nail EVH. Not even when Vai or Satriani give it a go. They can play his parts note for note, it just doesn't sound like Eddie only because they don't do things the same way. I hate to use the "you'll never sound like Eddie", but you won't. Nobody will. You can get close, but not by using his rig and settings. It needs to come from a different angle.
Fair Warning has got to be my all-time favorite tone of Eddie's.
Hard to beat the guitar on Fair Warning. Van Halen at their absolute best!
Eddy said himself every knob full blast then back one that’s not right just saying sounds good but not right
First guitar was too muddy. "Frankie" was best but not there yet. Final was too thin.
EVH Used the Marshall all the way through OU812. Obviously thats the tone everyone cares about. Thank God he never recorded very much at all with that high gain garbage.
I liked Frankie better than the LP. LP is a little too meaty.
Keep going you will learn one day
The Frankenstein got the little dreamer sound best I'd say.
Eddie's tone changed has his playing matured. 84 is my favorite album and tone.
Beautiful guitar, love that curly maple neck.
Way to much buzz.
The first album was the ground breaking tone.
Those settings sound nothing like the sound when he plays. I'm not talking about the player nor his skills. There is just way more going on with Eddie's sound than the settings on that amp. I'm not even talking about how Eddie sculpts the sound. I'm just talking purely about the missing compression, phase, sustain, etc. Definitely more than just that amp.
EVH Actual settings
The settings from the heaven
RIP Edward
Hope he's playing with the Abbot brothers, Cliff Burton and maybe Chris Cornell
Fair Warning all the way!
Van Halen II brings back my youth…love the sound, mature and aggressive, Fair Warning is 2nd… very close 2nd.
Eddie in 1991 was the best tone
Fair Warning without a doubt!!!
The music man and the LP rule on that tone.
Didn't he also use a Veriac? Or was that earlier. Surely there was something he did to clean up the hiss a bit.
Les paul
Fair warning ????
Marshall sounds better by far I would have liked to see you fiddle the knobs on the 5150 and see what more mids, less bass and less gain could accomplish.
Early tone 1 & 2
