It is sold out already on amazon ☹️
My only complaint is the packaging cds hard to get out and in
The review is informative, but it is a moot point. For whatever reason, the product is not available. I guess I could replicate its' tracklisting using my existing collection of Gillan CD's,my computer and my CD-R burner. Phil, you've got yourself a collectors item.
Bang on, Phil! GILLAN were/are f'n AMAZING – all 5/6 studio albums. Such a diverse band, visually and musically, but chemistry up the wazoo. I have the Edsel/Demon CD re-issues but I may have get get this boxset anyway.
Looks fantastic. Pre-ordered on Amazon in the US and was supposed to ship Feb 28, but no updates. Now you can’t even order it on Amazon in America. Starting to doubt if it will ever arrive ???? May have order elsewhere and see if I might cancel that. Recommendations for where to buy?
Received mine yesterday. One of the first 1000 with an autograph of Ian. What I didn't know. ????
Fantastic band as you say so different, the sound of my youth.
There's also double coloured vinyls of "Future Shock" pink+ blue disc and "Magic" red discs…. Future Shock has the gatefold and 16 page book as the original release.
Put a late order into Townsend Music on Sunday and they've actually sent me a signed copy of the cd boxset.
ordered, 'cause I only know mr. universe and magic . the last one I bought in '82 brand new.
Great Review Phil. This box is absolute a must have for me. I have only one Gillan cd so I order the box which is for a perfect box for me. Looks great to.???? o by way that only cd is glory road 2 cd version witch include for gillan fans only on cd 2.
great review. I agree on everything
Great review as usual ! I can’t believe this band did not get any AirPlay in the States ( NY/NJ/ Philly area) . Deep Purple got tons !
Received mine yesterday,a lovely packaged set.I totally agree that out of the Deep Purple off-shoots all of which I like Gillan were by far my favourite.Saw them at least once on every tour and even made the trip to Wembley
I already own the 2007 remasters and also managed to get a nice mint condition reasonably priced copy of The Japanese album which seems to go for crazy money now.
This looks a nice well put together set and I like the way it has been laid out, though I know some people like to have the albums individually in a box set but a great set for anyone who is just discovering these albums. Great review as usual Phil.
Hi Phil! I adore Mr.Universe as a Album very well! Great Sound and Songs! Perhaps- Pudget Sound is slightly boring! Take Care!!
I’m so grateful this box has been made ???? thank you for unboxing it ☺️
Dear Phil, you did a very good review of Gillan's albums. I agree with every word you say, especially when you say that Colin Towns knew exactly what kind of music he needed to write for Ian Gillan's voice. He was the only composer who understood exactly what the right music was for Ian. Much more than all the others and especially much more than Ritchie Blackmore. That's why I cry every day because since 1982, they have never worked together on a new album.
Tried preordering this from Amazon Canada, being in Toronto months ago. Got a email canceling my order saying it won't be available. Then preordered from Amazon UK and still nothing. Not sure what's going with the distribution of this release?
IVE GOT ONE COMING TODAY SO THANKS FOR EXPLAINING THE BOX SET AND WHY ITS RELEASED IN THIS WAY GREAT VIDEO THANKS
I can't understand why "For Gillan Fans Only" was not included. Seems a huge drop off. I have the vinyl but I would have loved to have a digital version to go mobile with.
What a fantastic review of all these beauties, thank you so much.
Great review Phil! Must check this out. Sure I read an interview with Colin Town's (?) some years ago saying Gillan pretty much left the band to do what they wanted and musically strayed bit far from the "core Gillan sound". Something like that anyway and assume the jazz elements could be a bit too jazzy?! EDIT: it's already sold out!!
What's that set to the right of Whitesnake on your shelf there, Phil? At first, I thought it was Marillion but it definitely isn't that. Does that say Weather Report?
Live Photos instead of two prostitutes? Nah! Fun fact. I went backstage in Hannover, West Germany the night Bernie Torment quit. Spoke to Ian and John. Bernie appeared fragile and mute. The club was tiny so the live sound was great. Sounded like East German tanks breaking through the iron curtain. Can’t listen to any of this nonsense anymore. I’ve tried believe me. Great video channel/video though. Many thanks.
Great review, as always. ????
Just received my copy. A bit of a potch to cut all the cellophane off, but the set is great. And it’s signed by Mr Gillan himself.
Well happy.
Great video Phil… I think I love this era of Gillan's career ALMOST as much as you ???? I already have all these on vinyl and CDs but was tempted by the pre-order signed edition. Looking forward to hearing these new CDs and find out if they are better sounding than the previously released CDs. OOft just had email saying mine will be delivered today !!!
Hello Phil, greetings from a fellow Cornwall inhabitant. I realise the box set states that the original masters were used where possible, do you know which album masters were used (shame that they can't find all of them)?
Great stuff Phil. And great review keep up the great work. ????????
Since Future Shock was the only album whose singles troubled the charts, my long lost Future Shock cassette had been my sole placeholder in the Gillan arm of the Purple offshoot tree. First priority is therefore to listen to New Orleans, Laughing In Heaven, Sacre Bleu et al after all these years.
Still, six albums of unheard material should keep me occupied for a while. Particularly with Little Box O Snakes competing for attention.
Just had an email. Pre-ordered copy en-route, waiting nearly done.
Why no comments on the mastering? So much has changed with what can be done with remastering these days. For me, the primary reason would be an upgrade in sound. Years and years ago, several albums were done by the "Repertoire label" and were significantly better than any prior or later issues. "Future Shock", "Double Trouble", and the "live Ian Gillan Band" were done. If you can find them headphone it and you will see that all the midranges were WAY more punchy / rich. I was so bummed that they didn't do "Glory Road" I don't know why they picked those particular albums, but they had to have had better source material..
Ordinato mesi fa lo sto aspettando
I saw this video this morning and as a,result I've ordered my copy from Resident in Brighton. Thanks for the heads up Phil!
The 2007 releases can't be bettered.
My copy coming Saturday. At the time of original releases I was still playing with my Star wars toys ????
Thanks for this, Phil. As I've got the 2007 Edsel reissues I won't be investing in this set but your review has made me want to play all of them again, especially 'Mr Universe' which I bought on Acrobat vinyl way back when. I like all of Gillan's albums, especially the Bernie Torme era. Bernie was a fabulously original guitarist and is sadly missed.
Thank you, Phil, for this great review and for giving the band Gillan its proper place in rock history. As great as Rainbow were in the Dio era, Gillan were really making progress in heavy rock music in the early eighties. Yes, the epics: Fighting Man, Mr. Universe, On the Rocks,… And thank you for explicitly mentioning the superb Sunbeam!
Great review. Ordered this before I got to the end of the review. Nice price too.
A lot of folks slate the Gillan band but they were fun , rather like The Faces had been a decade earlier. It was also great to see a metal band regularly on TOTP.
Hi Phill, got all these albums on vinyl also Gillan ,Live at the Bodokan volumes 1& 2 two seperate albums on Japanese imports. Bought them in a record shop in Ilford round about the same time Mr Universe was release????
I never quite got why he broke up Gillan.
Finally can get "Magic" on cd. Still have it on cassette. Great stuff, also still have Roger Glover "Mask" on cassette that want to upgrade on cd.
My copy arrived yesterday morning. ???? Nice box set! And yes, Fighting Man is a fantastic track. One of his best vocal performances ever.
I pre-ordered this box set from my local record store early January. When I heard it had been delayed for a couple of weeks I was about to cancel the order, but after Phil's glowing review I'm glad I didn't.
I vividly remember spotting the Mr. Universe album in the racks of one of the record stores which could be found all over the city centre of Rotterdam late 70s/early 80s. In the end I never bought anything by Gillan though I loved Roller, On the Rocks and had a cassette tape of the Future Shock album thanks to a mate and homecopying. Glad I can belatedly make amends.
And another 2 versions of Smoke on the Water won't go amiss either.
Good stuff Phil. I only have a couple of Gillan albums and always felt I should have more. This set looks ideal for my needs. Also I think the presentation has been thoughtfully done as a great deal has been put into such a slim sized package. Just ordered it on Amazon in fact and at £34.99 I think I am getting a good deal.
Will have to check this out, Gillan were probably my favourite band in the early 80s. Colin Towns was very talented and wrote a lot of the material, and his keyboards and flute gave the band an extra dimension to the NWOBHM bands around the same time. My all-time favourite Gillan track is Abbey of Thelema – both the Japanese album and For Gillan Fans Only versions – beautifully atmospheric and it rocks, with some classic Ian screams.
Great stuff. Thanks for this. The jazz fusion period was good. I take it that's a reference to the Child in Time album? I liked the version of the song on that album.
One of the best live bands around in their day. Met the man himself after one gig, fag in one hand, bottle of Jack Daniels in the other, looking every bit the rock star as he signed autographs. Glory Road remains my favourite of those records.
