  • Lower pickups and louder amps.. Tune height to tone for me. I like Dylan's balance idea will try this out.

  • I heard Jeff Beck say in an interview that he sets his Strat pickups close to flush to the pickguard to get the best tone and sustain as well as better tuning stability because when the pickups are farther away from the strings they don't pull as hard on them. This made sense to me, so I did it on my Strats. The instant improvement in tone and sustain was very noticeable at all settings, but particularly so when playing clean or slightly crunchy. Yes, overall volume went down a bit. The solution? I turned my amp up a bit.

I recommend that this be tried. You can always raise a pickup if you want to, but try them lowered to the pickguard. You may like the result, as did Jeff Beck, and me, too.

BTW, I did this with my Telecaster's bridge pickup and it had the same beneficial effect.

  • Great job a confidence builder for us that are less hands on. I do prefer mid and neck together. I have Texas specials I got in a loaded pickguard from stew mac. I have a cheap Indio S style to mod out. Thinking of trying a Cory Wong in the mid

  • I took advice from a Dan Patlansky video about his Strat tips, and he lowers his pickups almost to the pickguard. Much better tone, more sustain, and then they aren’t hitting my fingers or anything else. Highly recommended.
With my R9 Les Paul, I lower the neck pickup to just below the ring, then balance the bridge pickup… which ends up being just slightly above its ring. This is with identical PAF style “neck” pickups in both positions. I don’t like the sound of an overwound “bridge” pickup. YMMV.

  • I'm sure you guys are happier living in a house, but I have to admit I miss the travelin' days when you sat outside the motor home and did battle with garbage trucks and airplanes. I go back and re-watch those every so often. Thanks for all the stuff you share.

  • IMO – Simple way to do this is to set all your pickup heights to 4/16" on the bass side and 3/16" on the treble side. Then adjust to taste based on the output of your pickups. If you have a traditional Strat set where they are all the same output, you will probably need to raise the bridge to 3/16" on the bass side and 2/16" on the treble side to balance the volume and output.

  • I have all my ceramic pickups almost flush with the pickguards on all of my strat style guitars

  • I didn't mean to, but I came back to the OG sorta Fender setup for strat pickups. All pickups are different, but I went with neck lowest, middle a little higher, and bridge highest. This isn't universal, but it was how a lot of old Fenders started life. I also have flat radius pole pieces though since it ain't the 50s. I love clear, clean ringing strat notes, but also the scooped classic Strat sound so I am always looking for clarity. The OG lowest to highest neck to bridge arrangement usually gets me what I prefer. Each to his own, as the folks other side of the Atlantic say.

  • I do 4 mm on neck and middle pickup.. 2.5-3mm on the bridge… volume match all day. On my les pauls i have the neck at 4mm and bridge is at 2.5mm that is on both sides for all my pickups.

  • This is going to sound like I'm being fresh, but I'm serious man I really need help with this… could you do a video on how to approach this for a dog ear P90 guitar? (I have an Epiphone Casino)

  • Because I play on the neck pickup (pos 5) 70% of the time, I adjust it first to its sweet spot. Then I adjust the middle pickup until I get the best Pos 4 sound. Last I adjust the bridge to get the best Pos 2 sound. Usually neck and bridge are close to the same height and middle slightly lower than them.

  • My strat pickups are super low. Middle pickup flush to pickguard (because i hate it getting in the way and its why i generally don't play strats and prefer teles). Then neck and bridge probably 4-5mm away. Maybe more. Ill check when i get home.

  • Can’t wait. I usually kept all my humbuckers at 1/16 but recently found out slash keeps his at about 4mm from the strings… super low! I’ve always been a trying to get to slash’s tone /growl. The 4mm thing actually helped!
