  • wow I really need to go to his website, I am a trumpet player and starting to be a Bass guitarist in jazz band. You know it's hard to learn Bass Clef when you get used to Treble Clef. Thanks George you helped me a lot.

  • Hi! I've loved ur videos ! How ever, I'm confused on how to tune my guitar with the guitar tuna app ! It's very useful but hard to use … I use the electric bass 4 strings … Can u make a video in how to tune with that app..? Thatll be sooo great

  • I love you, George! Seriously. You have been able to do for me, what I feared might be impossible. I am nearly phobic regarding music study. But you kept it so… accessible and approachable that, with nary a skipping heartbeat, I was learning and playing this brand new bass, that I need to figure out. I play guitar and write songs but shied away from theory as all the instruction that ever came to me was from crazy accomplished musicians, always leaving me feeling overwhelmed and inadequate. but that was a long time ago! Thanks so SO SO MUCH. JIll

  • Hey George, thanks for this lovely lesson. By now, the notes are going reasonably well, but I don't know in what way I should dampen the strings that keep ringing. I don't seem to have the time with either my left or my right hand. And I don't see you doing anything in particular :-).

  • Thank you so much,

It turns out that my bass was a wee bit out of tune. I re-tuned it, and I found that I was also stretching my hand much farther than I needed to. I figured it out and found that it's quite simple to do!

    Thanks again,
    Sara

  • Hello Sara

You don't need to stretch. That can be awkward and painful in the beginning … and I don't advocate playing with pain. So, instead, just pivot to the fret you need.

You can also start in higher positions, say from the 5th fret onwards and gradually work your way down to the lower positions. This is what I teach in my course.

Please post a video of the occurrence and I will take a look and give you feedback. Maybe your hand position is not ideal?

    Bass of Luck!

  • Hello,
So Im 15 and I have long fingers, but I seem to be having trouble stretching from the starting fret and then to the one that's two over with my 4th finger. I tried standing up and tilting my bass a bit more to see if that would give me more reach, but it seems like I just can't stretch my hand like that. Help?

  • There are many things to check. They include:
    1. Is the bass tuned to correct pitch?
    2. Are the neck bolts tight?
    3. Is the neck convex or concave?

There are some good videos on bass setup on You Tube. (YT will not let us post links in the Comments.) If you are willing and able to check and do the setup yourself, proceed with caution. Otherwise get someone with experience to do the setup.

If you wish, post a video of you showing me the setup from various angles.

    Kind regards,
    George

  • my bass neck is tilting and the strings near the head are low action and the strings at the part where the neck and body meet are very high action. What should I do?

  • Sure, I do quite a bit of practice without an amp. This helps develop a good, solid sound, relying only on ourselves.

  • Hello Zack

Thanks for your request. I have many requests for You Tube lessons. Your idea is good and I will put in on my list. No promises for anything soon, however, as I am in the middle of recording a video series titled Modes for Bass.

    Kind regards,
    George
