Nylon String Hybrids: Classical Guitars for Every Player

A classical guitar can sometimes feel too different to a steel string for many of us—this is why we make hybrids. These responsive nylon-string instruments have a narrower nut width, radiused fingerboard and 12th fret neck joint, which make them more akin to a steel string but still deliver that wonderful Spanish and classical vibe. The feel and sound is special, the tone and reference take us to new horizons, and as we all know, reaching for a different sounding instrument can inspire fresh creativity.

This week on Alvarez TV, we’re discussing what makes these hybrids so fun to play and the construction behind each of today’s models.

  • ♋ some of the description is wrong , both players are playing the Hybrid cut away models 14-fret body ; there is no regular classical AC65 12-fret to be found in this video ⁉️❗????

  • What model are these guitars? Are all Alvarez nylon string guitars have the radius fingerboard?

  • Just bought the Alvarez ac65ce electro classical guitar (2024) model with the LR Baggs StagePro bronze. Most disappointed and sad. NO amplification whatsoever.Tested everything: cable, my amp, battery (new), controls, phase, tuner etc etc. TOTALLY dead. Had to repackage it and send it back to the online retailer! Now I see that this retailer has withdrawn the product, saying, “unavailable“! They had 9 for sale!! WHAT IS GOING ON ALVAREZ GUITARS? Please explain ASAP! THANKS.????????????QUALITY control? Manufacturing standards? ????????

  • The AC 65 on the Alvarez website has a Nut Width of 52 (mm). The other guitar is not there at all.

  • I clicked on the AC65 link and it brought me to a page showing a guitar sans cutaway. But it does call it an AC65 on that page. Do I cut my own cutaway after I buy it.

  • I own an Alvarez AC65HCE but it eats batteries, even when there's no lead plugged in… A battery will last 3 days at the most before the warning light comes on… I may have used the tuner two or three times… Obviously there's a fault on the unit or the jack plug section… But I can't find it… Have contacted you before… Received a response saying you would check it out, but have received no follow up… So.. Any ideas what may be the cause of this problem?… Thank you…

  • I play fingerstyle arrangements (mostly pop ballads) and I only play nylon due to the low tension and smooth sound. I have small hands and switched to playing crossover guitars. They are so much easier to play than the traditional classicals and I play so much better as a guitarist. I highly recommend them

  • Alvarez guitars have always been well made and quality instruments. My main problem with them is that, for some crazy reason, they are supplied with a strap button that is screwed into the heel of the neck. With that button in that spot on the instrument it is almost a guarantee that the instrument will be scratched, or the surface of a table will be scratched if the guitar is laid flat on anything. I think that positioning is ridiculous, particularly for people who don't like it there or who don't want a strap button at all.

Think things through Alvarez….most of this design stuff is pretty simple but you guys aren't helping yourselves. Include the forward strap button but don't mount it. Let the customer decide.

  • My question is should a classical guitar player consider a high end hybrid. Is it a poor compromise for finger style playing?

  • Would changing the nut, bridge and saddle make the guitar sound different based on material?

  • big question – how is the string tension. since it's 14 frets, i am assuming that the tension is much higher on these hybrids vs a traditional classical guitar….which circumvents a reason for buying the easier to play 12 fret classicals…….is it harder to fret?
