For Guitar Players, The Real Tube Amp vs. Digital Amp Modeler debate is age old, but in the recent past it has become more and more wild because modelers are just sounding really good. The feel of an amp and the amp in the room sound is not there, though. That’s why I came up with a method to combine all the advantages of real tube amps with the flexibility and convenience of digital amp modelers, hoping this will somehow end the amp vs. modeler debate. Just use both and combine their strengths!

0:00 Real Amps vs. Modeler Debate
1:16 The Sound of combining amps and modelers
2:24 The Setup
5:53 Sound Difference 1: Real Amps sound less polished
7:02 Sound Difference 2: More Harmonics
7:51 Sound Difference 3: Clean-Ups work better
9:24 Advantage: Tube Amp Sounds & Stereo FX
9:50 Flexibility of this Setup with a Modeler

  • Very cool. So your saying I should now also buy an amp to go along with my quad cortex? Deal!

  • Love your playing, and great sound. We have awesome tools that can make playing in different settings a joy, and not a compromise. Thanks for sharing your solutions.

  • I gigged this way for a couple years using a Helix and an EVH 5153 head and 412 cab. I really thought I needed tubes in the equations to get 'the tone'. Lugging all that shit to a gig was a major headache, and eventually realized I could streamline to a separate power amp (SD170) with the 412 and ditch the tube head, or for smaller gigs use an FRFR (Friedman ASM12). I haven't used a tube amp in 7 years, and I can't say I miss it all that much. Maybe one day I'll cave and get one again, just because. It would probably be a Friedman BE100, since I use the Fractal version 99% of the time. I've played real ones several times, and it's awesome… just hard to justify the expense when the Fractal nails it.

  • The captor X is Bluetooth you don’t have to get up to change IRs and the dyna IRs I’ve found to be way better then any traditional IR. I don’t use the line out I use the captors IRs I think they’re better then anything I have bought or that comes on my modeler

  • Been doing this a while now but I’ve been running my modeler in post like outboard effects gear. I run my tube heads into my captor X out there captor X into my modeler and use that as the interface into my daw

  • What I always miss are the feedback and the "feeling alive" a real amp with a big speak rack creates. I havent be able to do anything like that even though i play the signal our to my stereomonitors. Asume it comes down to the size of the cabinet speakers and the guitar mics uniting.
So play so kick ass by the way ????????

  • I have no clue on anything you're talking about. I know amp and pedals. ???? But you always sound amazing.

  • Awesome! I’m doing something similar:

    JCM2000 -> Ironman II -> OX Stomp

Works really well – cranked Marshall in headphones ????

  • I love it when people who have never owned a tube amp tell other musicians that their solid state amps is just as good. Then proceed to say how light they are, how the sound is so close that their bar customers don't care, and that they never need to play loud.
    ????????????????????????
So to sum up, dudes that never rock the fk out are OK with mediocre crap.
Oh, and they're rarely trained musicians. They're usually just a bedroom player.
Congrats bedroom players, you know everything! ????????

  • Imagine, you'd have a Fractal FM9 and a Hook Wizard (my absolut "I will never buy anything else in life"-dream amp) with midi switchable motor faders, where you can see the actual amp settings and even have the possibility to switch seemlessly between two presets… Also wondering, what this would sound like, when using something like the twin tracker of the Captor X into stereo FX…!? ???? Nevertheless – very inspiring music ????????

  • Latey I run my amps into an OxBox into a Fractal as my multi effects… It's been fun.

  • Hi, please let us know what humbucker pickup do you have in that greenish tele you play in the end.

    Thanks

  • Dude, you have the best tone. Any plans of releasing a JJ pack with your presets for the FM9?
