5 Reasons Why You NEED An EQ Pedal – The Guitarist’s Secret Weapon!

Dagan checks out a pedal that so many legendary guitar plays have coined as their ‘secret weapon’! The humble EQ pedal might not seem as crazy or game changing as an overdrive pedal, delay or chorus – But its integral to getting awesome UNIQUE tone! Just read anything about the genre defying tones of Eddie Van Halen and Dimebag Darrell and you’ll quickly realise its importance and significance in the world of guitar!

EQ’s come in many shapes and sizes; 6-band, 10-band, BOSS GE-7, MXR EQ Pedals, Graphic EQ, Parametric EQ, The bass, middle and treble EQ on regular amps, the EQ on something crazy like the Mesa Boogie Mark V Series & so many more. The more EQ in some cases the better, it gives you a chance to not only shape your tone so it’s perfect to you ear, but also make it unique to you! Almost like having a signature tone so your amp sounds better to you than anyone else with that amp & pedal set up!

There are so many different ways to use an EQ pedal, run its into the front of your amp to shape your tone prior to hitting the pre amp, or run it after in the effects loop of your amp to sculpt an already fully formed guitar tone! You can use it as a full on boost or just to boost certain frequencies, you can cut the high or low end giving you a unique ‘vintage radio’ type tone, and so much more!

  • what are the settings on the amp? First tweak the sound on the amp and then add the EQ pearl or settings on amp neutral and shape sound only with EQ pedal?

  • I have the MXR 108 ten Banks and I think about getting also the Tone tweaker by Carl Martins. One before and one after the distorsions. I also have a TS and a treble booster (Tony Iommi signature)

  • Yeah that antiboost trick is neat. You can always use boosts like attenuators, crank your tube amp and cut the volume with the pedal's volume pot, so get tube compression without deafening your friends.

  • Cheap cool trick i descovered, stick an eq between your cheap effect pedal and amp and your cheap effects pedal sounds expensive all of a sudden

  • Imo I think I found the best boost/EQ combo pedal in the J. Rockett Rockaway pedal. I love the versatility it allows.

  • Okay then I want it at the end of the signal chain, 4 videos to get to that. Should have known to seek you out first. Thanks

  • More on reason 1: some of the old Fender Amps, like the PA-100, they only have a bass, treble, and volume, so zero mid controls.

  • I have a Peavey Valveking 100 head. The lead channel has a distortion sound that leaves something to be desired. Thats putting it nicely. The distortion has a strange buzzing texture that sounds horrible. Overall, the Valveking combined with my Peavey 4×12 has a sound that is way too bright and piercing. To combat this, I run a 808 style overdrive into the front of the amp.
I set the overdrive for a darker sound. Volume at 9. Drive at about 3 and tone at about 4. The 3 band eq on the amp is set with Bass at 6.5, mids at 6.5 and treble at 4. Since Im pushing a lot of midrange in the signal path and a lot of mids from the pre-amp, I run a 15 band graphic eq in the fx loop.
With the 15 band eq, I leave all the sliders in a straight line at zero to start. I roll everything below 125 hz down, and I roll everything above 8k down. I also dip out a little bit of 670 hz, and a little bit of 1k and a very small amount of 2k.
So theres a big mid push in the front before and during distortion but a slight mid scoop post distortion. I have a few more toys for my rig, but just those two tricks have taken my treble heavy Valveking and made it sound bloomier, warmer, and darker. Like a Mesa Boogie Duel Rectifier. When I used to play shows, I used to get asked a lot as to how I made a notoriously bad sounding amp sound completely different
