So basically, you are taking the flatted 5th of each minor pentatonic scale a minor diatonic scale creates to produce your chromatic passing tones.

A person I come to really dislike back in the 90s said all I need is the major and chromatic scale to be a serious jazz player, they were a sax player. He was mostly right.

So.. when you’re thinking of adding in passing tones between 7 and 1, between 2 and 1, and between 4 and 5.. are you thinking of those scale degrees in the mode, or in the parent major scale? Like for example.. in D Dorian, would you be thinking of g, a flat, and a for going between 4 and 5 (in the mode), or would you be thinking of f, f sharp, and g as 4 to 5 (from the parent major scale)?

I’m slowly realizing that I’ve been doing the right thing all along and just felt stupid because I’d see guys talking about modes and altered scales and whatnot and that’s just never been how I think about what I’m playing, for me it’s always just been ‘oh here’s the key and now I’m gonna make it spicy because I can’.
