“The THR100HD is a very impressive package, boasting some truly unique features that will appeal to a lot of players”

Yamaha THR100HD Amplifier and Cab Review by Guitar Interactive Magazine. Reviewed in Issue 39 of Guitar Interactive Magazine by Tom Quayle. http://bit.ly/GI_I39

Welcome to GI 39, ushering in a new year and with a lot of exciting stuff on board!

Our cover star this time around is the American guitarist John 5. Stuart Bull tracked down this chameleon of a player in Los Angeles and brings us an intriguing insight into a man who might as well adopt ‘versatility’ for his middle name. If you’ve ever worried about getting pigeon-holed in your career – watch our interview this fabulous guitarist!

Another candidate for the Great Contemporary American Guitarist is Andy McKee, widely considered to be the master of percussive acoustic styles and someone we have wanted to include in the Quiet Room section since way back when the magazine began. Whatever you do, don’t miss Andy’s exclusive performances in this issue!

As always, we’ve a packed issue of reviews and our free tuition columns plus the chance to win an astonishing prize – a genuine Taylor acoustic guitar! http://bit.ly/GI_I39

I reckon that’s a pretty good way to start a New Year – don’t you? http://bit.ly/GI_I39

  • The HD works great for recording two guitarists DI. I’m using it record my son’s band. He goes in one channel and the other guitarist goes into the other. We’re getting great tones. They put their effects chains in front of the HD.

  • Got a fender gt200w and it don't sound that great so I'm looking for something more with more gain. I'm in to rock. It has ok clean but I think the finder gt sucks for crhutch

  • do you think this head is loud enough for a loud band? not really metal but more of a sludge rock band?

  • Does anyone know how the "blended" mode would work if you're plugged into an 8ohm MONO cab? Is that feature only for stereo cabs?

  • I want to hear how this sounds with preamp style pedals like the Bogner Red Ecstacy, Friedman BE-100 pedal, etc. This seems like it would be perfect for me. I want a single stereo head with stereo XLR out and true stereo. I am curious about the virtual power output tubes. I could run my stereo fx through the fx loop. I have a setup already like this with my dual Orange Micro Terrors and ADA Microcab II.

  • Sounds terrible and ugly to me. Great player, but terrible amp. Fuzzy, thin, farty, AND brittle. It's hard to get something that wrong, ya gotta hand it to them…
Yamaha (Roland as well, funny enough) is like that. It's a home run or a total strike out.
I can tell the guy is struggling to make it sound like something. It basically one sound with Mayo smeared all over. The effects are great, I have to say that.
WAY too expensive as well. I could buy a used Bogner, Boogie, or Dr.Z for that money.

  • This video sounds awfully harsh or something, not sure if its the guitar/mic setup but something is off. Not pleasing to me.

  • Guitar Interactive really know how to do a product demo. Some people who demo their company's product do a disservice to them because ,they only focus on certain functions of their product instead of giving a full product demonstration. Gi receives an "A" in this area because they focus on the entire product and its capablities and demo them accordingly.

  • I'm surprised nobody mentions that this is somewhat a novel re-marketing , repackaging and rebranding of Line6 innovation of yesterday! And it's not a surprise since they took over Line 6!

What they actually did here is to extract the amp-sim module out of the POD (the dual amp setup is already present in the older PODs i.e. X3… I still have them to this day!) and repackage it into a head size metal box! Whether they actually make it better is another whole issue altogether. I have not played the THRs and I can't comment. So instead of using the whole POD system as a desktop or floor unit, what they are doing is separating out the simulation modules and selling them seperately. I suspect it's old Line 6 technology their using and not bringing anything new to the table!

    Sheesh!
