The Greatest J-Pop Bass Line EVER

Talking about my latest musical discovery: J-pop music and one of it’s greatest bands: ZUTOMAYO (ずっと真夜中でいいのに。). I’ll break down one of the most incredible bass lines I’ve heard recently from groove, to amazing fills, to the jaw-dropping bass solo–let’s check out “STUDY ME” (お勉強しといてよ) and see just why it’s so amazing, and why Ryosuke Nikamoto is a name bass players all over the world should know!

Hello #PDBASS. Have you heard #JunaSerta???
Look, I know it’s an anime thing, but check out Afterglow’s cover of Dramaturgy (original by EVE). I love the original a lot, but there’s so much popping and slapping in the cover version by Afterglow (a “band” from a video game that has a number of Jrock/metal bands in it; Afterglow isn’t actually a real band, but all the music recorded is real, and some of their other very impressive acts like RAISE A SUILEN actually do have full live bands that are made up of the same people who voice act for the game. All of their skills are incredible).
I have yet to see anyone cover Afterglow’s version, and I feel like there’s a reason besides it maybe not being super well-known. It is complex and seems incredibly difficult to duplicate (in my humble, inexperienced opinion).
J-rock made me fall in love with the bass instrument ????
im glade you did the video for her thanks ☺
2:32 that keeps coming back to C minor
Hunch Gray and Kansaete Kuyashiiwa also have some of the best bass the band has to offer. God, I love them so much.
I am just getting into (attempting at) understanding (and loving ????) K-Pop production, and J-Pop will be next. I will review and learn from your video. ☺ Also, you have one of the best interpretations of Like-Comment-Subscribe. ????
Thank you for your great videos. Feeling home…
This chord progression or variances of it are literally in every Japanese song. Be it popular modern Vocaloid like Kanaria – Identity, Vocaloid from 10 years ago like siinemotaP – 少女A, completely different genres (Andora – Euphoria), game OST (Epic Seven Lobby OST), it's everywhere (milet – Tell me, AKASAKI – Bunny Girl, imase – NIGHT DANCER). Someone told me that people call it the "Just the two of us" chord progression
Study Me sounds also a lot like Stronger Than You from Steven Universe. Love how that chord progression just leans so easily into fun basslines and melodies!
Japanese songs is very groovy
Zuudomayo
It's Zutto Mayo
Can you do an episode on the bassist from Ling Tosite Sigure?
thank god youtube recommended this to me holy fucking shit
WHICH IS WHY I LOOOOVE LOOOVE ZUTOMAYO! It's crazy good!!!
Everytime I listen to Jpop I'm like "there's probably an anime somewhere this song would be the perfect opening/ending for" but on its own it just sounds kinda flat to me
Most Japanese artists are by far more technically advanced at playing extremely complicated music than most American artists.
time left is a goated piece and the one that introduced me to ztmy
エンターテイメント王国の方が日本の音楽(ベース)を細かく研究していて嬉しく思います。
同時にこんなに音楽を研究しているからあなた達に勝てないしあなた達の国の音楽が大好きです。
Try some Masoyoshi Takanaka, Casiopea, or T-Square. Casiopea has great bass tracks. Time Limit, Domino Line, among others. T-Square and Casiopea combined forces for "FIGHTMAN."
Takanaka-San is a fantastic guitarist who does city pop, and is 60, and still energetic on stage. He has played a 6kg surfboard guitar, and a slide guitar with a trainset on it. His best years (in my opinion.) are the late 70s, and early 80s.
Meanwhile, both T-Square and CASIOPEA are Japanese Jazz Fusion Legends.
Casiopea's original, and longest time Keyboardist, Minoru Mukaiya, did all of the trainstation jingles in Tokyo.
