Wave – Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #18: Advanced Phrase 137x
Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #18: Advanced Bossa Nova Phrase 137x (1376)
in:
Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim)
This is loosely based on two recordings by Tom Jobim, an instrumental version from 1967 released on album Wave and on Jobim’s duet with Frank Sinatra recorded in 1969.
Jobim usually played this song in D major, while with Sinatra it was recorded a semitone above (E flat). I chose a semitone above Jobim/Sinatra recording (E) as it makes it possible to have nice open E string bass for intro and transition parts and also makes it a bit easier to sing the melody the same way as Sinatra did (he sang E flat).
This lesson is about bossa nova phrases that contain 4 beat pattern where all pulses (16th notes) are played (pattern 7). Those are mainly used in song introductions, transitions (bridges) and closings. The phrases from this lesson differ only in the last part, that is second half of the second measure/bar, where they may contain 2, 3 or all 4 pulses.
Enjoy playing Wave by Tom Jobim!

Spoken by a classical composer and literary scholar:
There should be a great prize for Bossa-missionaries!
And this ought to be named after you, for the dedication you have put into this!
Thank you so much for making the world a better place!!!
Hi, i can't replicate the last lick and link it to the position of the hand in the video. Could you tell me the tab? Furthermore, I think the chord in min 3:04 and in 3:08 doesn't match the video.
